Encanto’s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” Skyrockets the Charts

More evidence that The Walt Disney Company has a streaming success on their hands with Disney Animation Studio’s Encanto.

On December 29th, That Park Place exclusively revealed that sources were saying Encanto was doing phenomenally well on Disney+ after bombing at the box office. The movie will still end up as a financial loss for The Walt Disney Company, but at least it’s finding solid streaming numbers, even if those don’t fix the money problem.

Now, Variety is reporting that one of the songs from Encanto is skyrocketing in popularity. The rise for “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” seems to correlate with many more people spending time with the movie now that it is free on Disney+. The movie made only $215,548,165 at the box office, a far smaller amount than movies like Moana or Coco have pulled in the past. The runaway success of Spider-Man No Way Home would seem to place the blame on something other than the pandemic.

How much additional views is Encanto earning on streaming? Enough that the soundtrack went from #110 on the Billboard to #7 once the movie released on Disney+. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is now the top trending music video in the world!

The soundtrack skyrocketed from No. 110 to No. 7 on the Billboard charts last week, along with being the No. 1 album overall on Apple Music and iTunes, the No. 1 song on Spotify’s Top 50 U.S. charts and the video garnering over 30 million views, with an additional 10 million in lyric videos.

The big winner here isn’t Disney, as they’ve already lost the opportunity to monetize this movie at any significant scale. The box office revenue is essentially over. Instead, the winner would seem to be Lin Manuel Miranda, the songwriter who has helmed a number of flops back-to-back-to-back at movie theaters. Even though Encanto is technically a financial loss for Disney, the popularity of the songs in the movie may be enough to keep interest from studio executives in using Manuel Miranda. That said, the songs from Encanto don’t seem to be as popular as songs from either Moana (for which he also was a songwriter) or Frozen. Still, Encanto needs some wins, as does Manuel Miranda, so they’ll definitely take this silver lining.

And 54 million views ain’t to shabby…
