The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its full list of Oscar nominations Thursday morning. While most of the Oscar nominees are unsurprising, some of the snubs are noteworthy.

In a rare moment for genre films, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, a vampire period piece, received a staggering 16 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. One Battle After Another, which failed at the box office but was expected to be a strong Oscar contender, picked up 13 nominations. Frankenstein received nine nominations, but surprisingly Guillermo del Toro is not up for Best Director.

The films and actors left out entirely are more shocking. Wicked for Good didn’t make the cut in any category. Ariana Grande was expected by many to get a Best Supporting Actress nomination, and the movie was considered a strong contender for Best Original Song, Production Design and Costume Design. Instead, it was completely shut out.

Dwayne Johnson, who tried to reinvent himself as a dramatic actor for The Smashing Machine, was also snubbed. The film’s lone nomination came in Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Similarly, Sydney Sweeney and her biopic Christy failed to score nominations in any categories.

The only Best Picture nominee that I watched was F1, and that’s only because I enjoy auto racing.

Vallor

As a non-race fan, I have watched and rewatched this movie. The cinematography is excellent and the story is timeless.

I got an Oscar. Is it because I is black?

James Eadon

Or gay. Or a terrorist.

James Eadon

Or an ugly, man-hating, foaming-at-the-mouth, woke, halfwit feminist?

Vallor

Embrace the power of “And”

James Eadon

I LOLed at that. Indeed.

The only good thing the Oscars are for is for which movies to avoid.

Vallor

Amen! I second that. I use their noms to build my own “unless a trusted friend says good things about a movie, don’t even bother with pirate bay,” type list.

Vallor

It is too bad Sinners will be seen as a DEI winner. It was a good movie, but it wasn’t THAT good.

Grande got so thin she slipped entirely into the 2nd dimension and became a cartoon. The Oscars only allow best actor/actress, supporting actor/actress for 3D, living beings. Until she proves she can consume food she’s out of the running.

Most of the rest are the standard, predictable, Hollywood circle jerk we’ve come to know and despise. Just a few popular flicks salted in so the Academy can pretend to represent all movie goers, even the lowbrow who enjoy things like F1.
