D23 Day One in Review: Hocus Pocus, Inside Out & More

We’re covering the four biggest news items of the day out of D23. Here’s what Disney is leading with out of the gate.

First up, we’ve got the new trailer for Hocus Pocus 2. There’s nothing here that is mind-blowing and it seems the witches are being played like a female version of the Three Stooges. It could turn out okay, could be bad… it’s hard to say from just this trailer.

As we predicted earlier today, Inside Out 2 is on the way… and it’s coming to us in 2024. Sources are telling us Moana 2 comes out in 2025, but no word yet on whether that gets announced this weekend.

There’s a new CGI show coming to Disney+ next year. It actually looks really good and is based in Africa. This is one we’re keeping track of and crossing fingers for a full success!

Finally, Disney showed off the teaser trailer for their live action Little Mermaid movie. This one is drawing mixed reactions. At first, the trailer is absolutely stunning, but once we get the vocals for Ariel, we may be back in the territory of Beauty and the Beast. It’s not fair to these actors and actresses to have them perform the same songs as the original musicians who are often the best vocal talents on the planet. Just like Emma Watson couldn’t pull off the musical talents of the animated Belle (Paige O’Hara), it’s a very tall order to ask someone to match up with Jodi Benson, original voice of The Little Mermaid.

There were some other announcements today which we’ll link to in our additional articles section. But judged by our writers and staff, these were the ones worth paying close attention to. There’s also a story going around about Bob Chapek being booed… we’d cover it if it was substantial. However, be aware that there are sites with emotional and vested-interest need to portray it as some major moment. It wasn’t and any boos were barely heard.

It would make for some easy clicks though, huh? But we don’t do the bait stuff…

Do you remember what the Diablo Immortal reveal looked like at Blizzcon. That was a real negative reaction. There’s been nothing like that at D23, so there’s no point running with a bunch of fake news.

Also, if you haven’t seen the underwhelming reveal of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure model yet, read all about it here. We’re not very impressed.

Much is still on the way Saturday and Sunday, so stay tuned to That Park Place. As always, drop a comment down below and let us know your thoughts.
