Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral Halts Many Companies’ Plans for a Silly Holiday

Many global corporations were forced to pivot away from a silly holiday as the Queen’s funeral impacted worldwide mood. Others continued with muted efforts.

Marketing professionals sometimes have a hard job juggling what to do with promotions and advertising drives in the face of real world tragedies. Such was the case today as many companies were stuck figuring out whether or not the should continue forth with “Talk Like a Pirate Day” even as Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin was being interred for eternal rest. While most companies either toned down their silly ideas for a farcical holiday, some on Twitter were not as respectful.

Though some may have made light of the situation, it makes sense that many global companies would quickly adjust their plans. It would be seen as more than rude to push out pirate talk promos and tweets at the same time many of your followers are in an official state-sponsored time of mourning.

Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Sept. 8 in her estate in Balmoral. Since then, the Queen’s body safely made its way back to London as the Royal family gathered to pay respects to their lost relative. The UK has entered into a state of mourning for 10 days as radio stations are now required to play somber and sad music, as well as images of the queen appearing on almost every screen.

But it wasn’t all an easy thing to suddenly shift. UK based Rare was stuck having offered a Community Day with special rewards prior to the passing of the Queen. A date shift came about but still had the developer in a bit of a tough spot.

Other companies found themselves in a similar boat. Captain D’s continued with their promo for the day, but did so in a far more muted way than one might expect. And perhaps that’s for the best — even a bit of fun can wait for the solemnity of the day to close. There will be many more opportunities to talk like a pirate. But the chance to pay respect to the last remaining world leader to participate in World War II… well, that’s come to a close. That’s big enough to pause the fun. And that even comes from a site dedicated to covering all the stuff that should be fun.
