Genie+ Price Drops After Thanksgiving, Still Higher than Starting Cost

The takeover of the Walt Disney Company by Robert Iger, and the ousting of Bob Chapek, was supposed to fulfill the wishes of many Disney Parks enthusiasts.

The week after Thanksgiving is one of the most sparsely crowded weeks of the year at the Walt Disney World Resort. Families tend to go back home and the Christmas crowds will still not be here until another week or two. Consider the last days of November, as well as the first days of December, as an island of nobody sandwiched between two very hectic holiday rushes.

For Thanksgiving Week, and for the first week of Bob Iger’s return, Genie+ prices soared to their highest amount ever. At twenty-seven dollars per person, families of four were paying more than one-hundred dollars for a single day of Lightning Lane access. It wasn’t quite the consumer-friendly start many had expected when Iger was announced as the returning CEO. But surely with a week under his belt and historically-low crowd levels on the way, the week after Thanksgiving would prove to be a fresh restart.

Well, not so much.

Although I’m sure Genie+ isn’t the top priority for an incoming CEO, you would think still that a memorandum could have gone out that pulled down pesky prices that harm the Disney Park’s perceptions. Instead, Genie+ is coming down off of its historic high, but it’s still going to be more expensive than its original price. Originally marketed at $15 per person, Genie+ will now be $17 per person for one of the least-crowded weeks of the year. It would seem that paying fifteen bucks is a thing of the past.

It’s not a great start for those who were wishing for less nickel-and-diming strategies out of Disney Parks. Still, hope springs eternal. Maybe once Iger has had time behind the control panel he will start lowering those prices so families on lower incomes can enjoy the full Disney experience once more.
