The college football championship game was the setting for Marvel’s big new trailer. Premiering during the sporting event, Paul Rudd’s tiny trilogy character made an appearance, but was it a splash or ripple?
The MCU is looking for a hit. The cultural zeitgeist has moved ever-so-slightly away from Marvel superheroes and towards characters like Maverick and Avatars. That’s not to say that Marvel is unpopular. Throngs of fans are still excited to see new Marvel movies, even while concerning signs begin to flash that Phase 4 MCU films were off track. About half the audience went to see the Black Panther sequel as went to see the original. Though inflated movie ticket prices hide that to a large degree, the experts at Disney and Marvel are no-doubt aware of the diminishing cultural impact of the films.
It’s not too late though. Far from it! And another shot for the MCU to generate excitement is coming this late winter / early spring. The third Antman film is on the way. Check out the trailer below and see if you think this might be a return to form, or if 2023 might be a continuation of lackluster post-Endgame drudgery.
So what do you think of Marvel’s latest trailer? Could this be the next film that puts Disney’s version of Marvel back on the very top of pop culture? Or will Marvel continue to be a close-second for a little longer?
