It’s hard to have a win like this and not see more wins coming down the pipe. Whatever the controversies may have been, JK Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise is alive and well. The market has spoken.
After years of dormancy at the box office, decades of less than notable video games, and controversy surrounding key creatives, the Wizarding World can be a bit unpredictable from a financial standpoint. As we’ve covered here on That Park Place before, Hogwarts Legacy has been a bit of a hot topic amongst a vocal part of the Harry Potter fan community. Well, now that it’s released, it appears that Hogwarts Legacy knows no bounds. WB Games and Avalanche Studios new Hogwarts student simulator is breaking records left and right.
While the game officially released on Wednesday, February 10, users who paid for the deluxe edition were allowed early access on certain platforms. Despite having one hand tied behind its back from a sales standpoint, Hogwarts Legacy still managed to be crowned “the #1 single player game ever on Twitch with 1.28 million peak concurrent viewers at launch” in the three day period before full release.

On Saturday, Forbes reported that Hogwarts Legacy broke a similar record on Steam, and was only beat out by the multiplayer battle royale game PUBG: Battlegrounds. Neither of these figures account for players that did not stream their play sessions or played on a console like the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.
According to CNN, Hogwarts Legacy is expected to sell 10 million copies in its initial launch period. The game is not expected to release on previous generation systems like PS4 and Xbox One until April, at which time sales figures should receive a significant boost. Finally, a version for the Nintendo Switch is slated for release at the end of July 2023, giving console players their first opportunity to play the game in a mobile format.
At a budget estimated to be $150 million, Hogwarts Legacy has probably already made its money back. As we have covered here and on WDWPro’s YouTube channel, Hogwarts Legacy is viewed internally at Warner Bros Discovery as a testing ground for popular sentiment on a Harry Potter franchise reboot. WBD CEO David Zaslav has stated on earnings calls that he would love to work not just on a Harry Potter reboot, but specifically with J.K. Rowling on a revitalization of the franchise.
Harry Potter continues to show his strength as a franchise that can be marketed to both genders, spanning the spectrum of age demographics and bringing in revenues that must be making the Walt Disney Company contemplate their path forward as attempts to shift the target demographics of Marvel and Star Wars from male to female have stalled at the box office, in streaming, and in merchandise sales.
