We’ve been reporting on how unpopular the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser is. Now it’s getting worse.
Before you read this article, just know that what we’re discussing is not a long-term solution. This is the sort of Band-Aid that Disney is willing to put on a black eye long enough to try to retool. And you’d better believe it ties into The Mandalorian finally showing up at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The characters of the sequel trilogy can’t pull the Star Wars hotel to profitability — or even the ability to stay open — and Disney has no choice when it comes to arguing with the market.
Here’s the original story from WDWNT with their breaking news:
Disney has announced that the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser two-night immersive adventure will only operate twice per week starting in October.
The change comes after month of disappointing occupancy. The Galactic Starcruiser debuted just over a year ago, and while bookings were at capacity for a while, the current operations had reached a point where there were only enough guests to fill one dinner service.
And, of course, this also comes on the heels of Drunk3Po’s scoops about the hotel sometimes only having a few rooms reserved for the entire experience.
With the service only operating twice per week (four days) and with some days reserved for clean-up, refurbishment, etc, it is now clear that The Galactic Starcruiser will be closed about 50% of the time. Remember, that we just recently passed the one-year anniversary of its opening. So to see the hotel collapse to this degree only one-year in is remarkable. Do not be surprised at all if we see a long period of closure in early 2024 as the hotel is completely reimagined in terms of story… and possibly business structure.
And surely this must be throwing cold water on Lucasfilm, who is alleged to be considering another sequel trilogy era movie reveal at the next Star Wars Celebration.
You can bet that one thing very important for our coverage is that we’ll be watching to see the ratings from Nielsen for the first episode of The Mandalorian in this new season. If that too is down, Star Wars fatigue may now be fully engulfing the entire brand. It clearly had already engulfed the hotel experience, practically from Day One.
