The Jonathan Majors Situation for Disney is Messy

Star villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jonathan Majors, was arrested over the weekend for allegedly assaulting a woman who may be his girlfriend. Now, a huge mess has exploded for Disney.

We’ve watched Rick and Morty co-founder and voice actor, Justin Roiland, be accused and then exonerated, yet still with serious consequence to his career. The same happened to Johnny Depp. Countless other men have faced false accusations which, once recanted, have damaged their lives in deeply impactful ways. Yet still, we recognize that men are physically dominant in a way that most women are not (despite what some in the world might try to say). When accusations of physical violence are made regarding a man attacking a woman, a civilized society takes that very seriously. That’s especially true when there is alleged photographic evidence of injury. Surely it is good to get to the full facts of a situation such as this — when allegations are made, they should be pursued. But likewise, prudence is required given that we have now watched multiple rounds of women attempting character assassinations against famous men.

It would seem that just like there are amazing and wonderful people of both “man” and “woman” categories, there are also those who would deceive.

In the case of the Jonathan Majors story, someone is attempting to deceive. The lead actor who has been heralded in semi-religious tones by Hollywood could be deceiving us all by having his attorney claim he is innocent when he is not. Or perhaps his girlfriend is deceiving us by setting up a situation where it seems like she was attacked when she was not. We simply do not yet know what happened, even if the clickbaiters out there are rushing to take a position and get some ad revenue.

Whatever the case may be, it’s getting very ugly for Disney.

The Army has already pulled advertising featuring Mr.Majors, citing an “overabundance of caution.” Some of his co-workers are claiming that he’s a psycopath with a history of abuse.

The attorney for Mr. Majors is claiming that the actor’s female friend was having a mental health crisis, that video evidence will prove it, that she was taken to a hospital for mental health issues and that she has recanted her allegations.

According to Chaudhry, video evidence of the incident, which occurred within a vehicle, and testimony from witnesses will prove the actor’s innocence. The woman also took back her accusation of assault in written statements, Chaudhry said.

Chaudhry added that the woman “was having an emotional crisis, for which she was taken to a hospital yesterday.”

Yet outside of his attorney’s statement, none of the other information has been corroborated at all. Perhaps it will be today, perhaps it won’t be. Maybe this gets uglier, maybe it all goes away within twenty-four hours.

Whatever happens, there’s a billion dollars riding on this. If Kang the Conqueror is either recast or removed from the MCU, it only adds more woes to a Disney company that is struggling mightily with its once untouchable Marvel franchise. And whether or not Jonathan Majors receives the Johnny Depp treatment or the Ezra Miller kiddie-gloves is largely dependent on how much money could be lost by large corporations.

For now though, it seems prudent to stop running stories that could damage whichever person is the victim in this situation. There will be a time to discuss all of the repercussions of this situation — but that seems to be once we have more facts available to make rational conclusions.

I won’t hold my breath for the rest of the media to share that same sober take.

Seems like an Ezra Miller situation almost.

Phase 4 and 5 have been ass so far.

Might be in their best interest to keep that pause on all Marvel projects, and write Kang out and go back to the drawing board. Else pause everything and reboot the whole universe.

I really don’t want Mr. Majors to be cancelled based on some “she said” situation, but Kang and the multiverse are nothingburgers that aren’t generating audience interest.

Disney should find a way to throw away this multiverse plot, make Kang just a henchmen that introduces to the actual big baddie, and find a way to get Marvel back on track.

Of course, they won’t do any of that.

Disney seems in a tight spot when it comes to Kang… in multiple ways.
