Dave Filoni is at the helm of his first showrunner position for a Star Wars live action series. The master of prequel cartoons is taking one of his characters for a spin in resurrecting Timothy Zahn’s concepts.
Of all the things shown off at this year’s Star Wars Celebration so far, this one has the highest probability of being good. Dave Filoni may be losing points for the latest season of The Mandalorian, but surely he can make Ahsoka a fantastic series, right?
Lucasfilm and Disney had better hope so. If they can’t get things turned around immediately, all of this other Star Wars content is likely to die on the vine. They’ve already greatly underperformed with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Boba Fett, and the third season of The Mandalorian. If they continue to lose steam with Ahsoka, this whole thing unravels from a precarious position to a feeling of doom.
You might think I’m going a little too far, but consider that The Mandalorian has had episode after episode outdo the last this season… not in quality… but in being the worst reviewed Star Wars Disney+ content so far. That’s a freefalling bar that perhaps should be stopped with great haste.
But for better or worse, Filoni is about to be put on center stage. Can he pull off the big league effort, or does this show expose him as maybe being on a pedestal too grand?
We’ll find out… later this summer…
