Tom Cruise is going after Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm with a direct shot! The Hollywood mega-star is moving up Mission Impossible by two days and cutting into Indy’s run.
There may be no love lost as Tom Cruise is going directly after the summer box office and he doesn’t care if Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in his way. No, the Top Gun Maverick star is actually moving his film closer to Indiana Jones 5 at the last minute, and just as screenings of Indy have been held by high-level figures across Hollywood.
Does Tom know something about the film that we don’t? Does he sense there’s an opening here?
Dead Reckoning Part One hails from Cruise good luck charm Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed, written or produced a number of his projects over the past decade. It has a release date of July 12 (moved up two days), with Dead Reckoning Part Two expected for June 28, 2024.

The change means that Indiana Jones could lose premium screens very quickly. It also means the film now only is limited to twelve days of limited competition before Cruise is likely to take the top spot. Could Indy only sit at number one for a single weekend?!
The Mission Impossible franchise has been captivating audiences for over two decades with its thrilling action sequences, intricate plots, and unforgettable characters. The films, based on the 1960s television series of the same name, follow the adventures of Ethan Hunt, a skilled agent of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) as he completes seemingly impossible tasks. The franchise has become a cultural phenomenon, and it continues to draw in audiences with each new installment. But what is it about the Mission Impossible films that make them so resonant with viewers?
The franchise began in 1996 with the release of the first Mission Impossible film. Directed by Brian De Palma, the movie starred Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, alongside a talented cast that included Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, and Ving Rhames. The film was a box office success, grossing over $450 million worldwide, and received critical acclaim for its gripping storyline and intense action sequences.
For Indiana Jones, the franchise goes back to the early eighties, but since The Last Crusade launched as the nineties began, the series has lost a lot of relevancy. Now, it may be that Mission Impossible’s continuance and level of excellence has propelled Tom Cruise to being able to take on directly the character that was once considered up there with Luke Skywalker and James Bond!
In 2000, the franchise released its second installment, Mission Impossible II. Directed by John Woo, the film took the action to new heights with its adrenaline-fueled stunts and explosive set pieces. Although the film received mixed reviews, it was still a financial success, grossing over $546 million worldwide.
In 2006, the third film in the franchise, Mission Impossible III, was released. Directed by J.J. Abrams, the movie brought a fresh energy to the series, with a new cast of characters and an even more intense storyline. The film was another box office success, grossing over $397 million worldwide.
In 2011, the franchise released its fourth installment, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Directed by Brad Bird, the movie was praised for its inventive action sequences and stunning visual effects. The film was another financial success, grossing over $694 million worldwide.
You get the idea… Mission Impossible has stayed relevant, while Indy was chasing Crystal Skulls with Mutt swinging in CGI trees.
One of the reasons why the Mission Impossible films resonate so strongly with audiences is the character of Ethan Hunt. Played by Tom Cruise in every film, Ethan is a skilled and resourceful agent who is always willing to go the extra mile to complete his mission. He is also a complex character with a tragic past, which makes him all the more relatable to viewers. Whether he is fighting off villains or navigating complex interpersonal relationships, Ethan is a character that audiences root for and care about. Indiana Jones once resonated even more strongly. But it’s been decades since we’ve seen that really come to fruition. Now, we’re all left wondering, can Harrison Ford and company find the magic just once more?
It’s lining up to be a heck of a summer and perhaps a sea change in more ways that we had at first expected.
