Scores on Rotten Tomatoes for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 are down when compared to the other two films. That’s especially true for top critics who are more free to give their true opinions.
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have become a beloved and iconic part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since their debut in 2014. The first two movies, directed by James Gunn, are full of heart, humor, and action. But is the third changing the tone too radically for critics and fans?
The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was released in 2014 and introduced audiences to a ragtag group of misfits who become unlikely heroes. The team includes Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). The movie is set in space and has a retro feel, with a fantastic soundtrack of ’70s and ’80s hits. The plot centers around a powerful orb that everyone wants to get their hands on. The Guardians find themselves caught up in a galactic war between Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and Thanos (Josh Brolin). Along the way, they also encounter other interesting characters, such as the Collector (Benicio Del Toro) and Yondu (Michael Rooker).
One of the standout features of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie is its humor. The movie is full of witty one-liners, funny moments, and clever references. The humor adds a lightheartedness to the movie that makes it fun to watch. The soundtrack also adds to the movie’s charm, as it is full of classic songs that fit perfectly with the movie’s retro vibe.
The characters in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie are also a highlight. Each character has a distinct personality and backstory that makes them interesting to watch. Peter Quill is a lovable rogue, Gamora is a tough warrior, Drax is a literal-minded warrior seeking revenge, Rocket is a genetically engineered raccoon with a sharp tongue, and Groot is a sentient tree with a heart of gold. The chemistry between the characters is fantastic, and it’s a joy to watch them interact with each other.
Overall, the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie is a fun and exciting ride. It’s a great introduction to the characters and the world they inhabit. It’s full of humor, heart, and action, making it an enjoyable movie to watch.
The sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, was released in 2017 and reunited audiences with the lovable misfits. The sequel picks up a few months after the events of the first movie and focuses on the theme of family. Peter Quill discovers that his father is Ego (Kurt Russell), a god-like being who has been searching for his son for years. The movie delves deeper into the characters’ backstories, giving them more depth and making them even more relatable. The relationship between Peter Quill and his father is explored, as is the relationship between Gamora and her sister, Nebula (Karen Gillan). The movie also introduces new characters, such as Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki).
The humor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is just as sharp as in the first movie. The banter between the characters is still hilarious, and there are some new running gags that are sure to make audiences laugh. The soundtrack is also excellent, with some lesser-known ’70s and ’80s hits that fit perfectly with the movie’s theme.
Because the two movies are both so good, fans often debate which is better. That’s a great sign for the franchise. However, now that we have the Rotten Tomatoes reviews from critics (and yes, I know RT is not a stalwart website for accuracy), we’re seeing a drop in the overall score. Whereas the first two movies had excellent review totals, the third is currently at 78%… and lower with top critics.
With some of the reviews noting how sad and depressing parts of the movie are, including an apparent injury that sidelines one character for a major portion of the film, many are beginning to worry. Can Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 be just as great when there’s sadness and despair in the middle of the film? Or will some of the fun and zaniness be lost as we prepare to say goodbye to some of our very favoritest characters in all of the MCU?

I shut off G2 during the opening scene. Took but a minute to know i wasn’t interested. Since then I’ve tried to watch G1 again (liked it first time around), gave up quickly. Not sure why, but just sour on the whole thing for some reason.
The ride is good, great way to boogie out to Disco Inferno.
