Box office analyst Valliant Renegade predicts The Marvels will lose hundreds of millions due to its massive budget and posting one of the worst opening weekends in Marvel Cinematic Universe history.

The Marvels had an opening domestic weekend of $46.1 million and another $62.8 million internationally for a global gross of $108.9 million.
The $46.1 million domestic gross is the worst of any Marvel Cinematic Universe film without having to adjust for inflation. The Incredible Hulk previously had the worst opening weekend at $55.4 million, but that was back in 2008.
Deadline also reports that $62.8 million international gross and the $108.9 million global gross is the worst of any Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

To put some perspective on how terrible the film’s global opening was Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a domestic opening weekend of $106.1 million back in February. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had an opening weekend of $118.4 million domestically.
That’s right Quantumania nearly had a higher domestic gross for opening weekend than The Marvels less than a year ago. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did have a higher domestic gross than The Marvels did globally about six months ago.

On top of the poor opening weekend box office performance, the film has a massive production budget that it needs to cover, something that it will unlikely do given then poor opening weekend performance.
Forbes’ Caroline Reid reported back in September that the film had already racked up a net production budget of $219.8 million at the end of September 2022. She specifically reported, “It spent $274.8 million (£221.8 million) and banked a $55 million (£44.4 million) subsidy from the government of the United Kingdom where the movie was made. This brought its net spending down to $219.8 million.”

Given the poor opening weekend and the film’s massive budget, box office and financial analyst Valliant Renegade shared that he believes the film will lose hundreds of millions of dollars.
First, he detailed that he believes the production budget is likely a lot higher due to reshoots, “I have a feeling that’s not all of it because there have been a lot of reshoots this year that would not show up in the financial reporting until likely next year. And, of course, that doesn’t even include what they spent to market this thing.”
He continued, “We’re talking about a film that probably has somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 million all in costs by The Walt Disney Company. It needs to get to $800 million globally to think about breaking even. And this movie is likely to finish its run at around $200 to $250 million, which is about what Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in its first three days of its opening weekend.”
Given he believes the film needs to gross around $800 million to break even and he believes the movie will peter out at $250 million, The Walt Disney Company and Marvel Studios are looking at hundreds of millions in losses.
