Matthew Vaughn and Henry Cavill’s upcoming action spy-thriller film Argylle is going to have a huge uphill battle to attain profitability based on opening weekend predictions for the movie.

Box Office Pro predicts the film will only gross between $15 million and $23 million in its opening weekend at domestic theaters. Their latest total box office gross prediction for the film was a range between $65 million and $95 million.
This is down from the outlet’s original long-range prediction at the beginning of January that predicted the film would gross between $20 million and $30 million in its opening weekend and go on to earn a total of $65 million to $105 million during its entire domestic run in theaters.

Box Office Pro is not the only outlet to claim that Argylle is going to struggle at the box office. Variety’s Rebecca Rubin predicts the film will only open to a $15 million to $20 million opening weekend.
Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro predicts the film will have a $20 million opening weekend.

Samuel L. Jackson in “Argylle,” premiering in theaters February 2, 2024.
The film’s poor opening weekend predictions are exacerbated by the movie’s huge production budget of $200 million. As box office analyst OMB Reviews points out a film with that high of a production budget needs to make “roughly $500 to $600 million to actually break even.”
And he asserts, “We could pretty much say that this film is guaranteed to be a flop at this point.”
The film is getting poor reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes it currently has a rotten 37% from 107 reviews. There are 40 fresh reviews and 67 rotten reviews. The average review is a 5.2 out of 10.
The Top Critics score is even worse at an atrocious 13%. There are 4 fresh reviews and 27 rotten ones. The average review is 4.5 out of 10.

If the audience scores are as bad as the critic scores, it’s unlikely the film will have any legs. The Jason Statham led action film The Beekeeper had a soft opening weekend, but has had strong legs in the three weekends since it’s been in theaters.
The film had an opening weekend of $16.5 million. It had a 48% dip in its second weekend to $8.6 million. However, in its third weekend it only dipped 22% to $6.6 million. The film has grossed $43 million at the domestic box office so far and another $60 million internationally for a global gross of $103 million.
The film has received high praise from viewers with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes audience score albeit it has an average IMDb score of 6.6 out of 10.

The Beekeeper key art
It’ll be interesting to see if Argylle can try and leg out, but as OMB Reviews notes the massive production budget and these poor predicted opening weekend numbers do not look good at all for the film.
