The Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg, Tennessee area has seen impressive gains in the past decade as a nationwide destination for families. After having been ranked number one, even above Orlando, Florida, for top vacation spots in the United States, and Dollywood having been ranked by USA Today as the best theme park in the country… it doesn’t seem things are slowing down. Dollywood is now gaining a drone-based nighttime spectacular — an impressive accomplishment for a park that once was a small, regional attraction!

Set in the deciduous mountains of East Tennessee, Dollywood’s new nighttime show will feature an original Dollywood story, lights, drones, and fireworks, which are almost certain to center around Dolly Parton’s favored icon: the butterfly. Expect a live DJ, music of various genres, and potentially a rush of guests exiting the park at the end. We recommend staying after the fireworks for about thirty minutes to let the vast majority of the crowd leave first. One of the few negatives about Dollywood is its potential bottleneck exit where guests are funneled mostly through a gift shop of an older era.

Dollywood joins Magic Kingdom and Epcot – both located in Walt Disney World – for having new fireworks shows debuting in 2021. While we expect Magic Kingdom and Epcot to feature more impressive shows than Dollywood, don’t be surprised if that changes in the coming decade. After all, Dollywood has come a long, long way in the past twenty years, and it still has plenty of steam to continue its growth in size, quality, and features.
