Sense and Sensibility was the first novel written by Jane Austen and is set in the late 18th century. It follows two sisters Marianne and Elinor who find themselves in tough circumstances after the death of their father, who leaves his fortune to his eldest son from his first marriage. The two sisters, their mother, and their third sister leave their home and move in with a cousin.

As is typical with Austen novels, a romance story is weaved between the two sisters and a number of gentleman who enter their lives including Colonel Brandon, John Willoughby, and Edward Ferrars.

NPR reports this adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is “a diverse, full-on period drama based on Austen’s first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, complete with lavish ballgowns and Regency-appropriate manners.”

NPR’s Carole V. Bell adds, “UK-based British actors and actresses of African descent play four of the five principal characters — Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, and potential suitors Colonel Brandon and Mr. John Willoughby.”

Specifically, Deborah Ayorinde plays Elinor and Bethany Antonia plays Marianne. Martina Laird plays Mrs. Jennings while Carlyss Peer plays Fanny Dashwood. Victor Hugo plays John Willoughby and Akil Largie plays Colonel Brandon. Canadian actor Dan Jeannotte plays Edward Ferrars, who is the brother of Fanny Dashwood in the novel.

Despite race replacing nearly the entire main cast for the adaptation, the show’s Creative Producer Tia A. Smith says the production had two goals, “respect the work and do something creatively refreshing.”

Based on the casting efforts, it clearly failed on both. Race replacing the characters is not respecting the work. And race replacing is not creatively refreshing it’s creatively bankrupt.

It also appears these goals are simply lies as well given Bell would later detail the true motivation behind this adaptation is revenge, “In some ways, this production of Sense and Sensibility is a counterbalance to prior erasure.”

The show’s Executive Producer Toni Judkins said she planned on race replacing the characters since 2021 telling NPR that the female characters “are smart, strong women who subtly push up against the conventions of their time, with grace and dignity.”

She added it was “easy to see how black women embody so many of the traits of these characters. That made Sense and Sensibility a natural fit.”
