A new trailer has dropped for the upcoming Marvel film, Shang Chi. Both Shang Chi and their other upcoming film, The Eternals, will be interesting barometers for Disney as they determine the viability of films based on lesser known comic properties. While it worked once for Guardians of the Galaxy, there’s no guarantee that will become a pattern.
Even if the movie manages to release in China — something that Lebron James’ Space Jam New Legacy just failed to pull off — it may not do well in the “Middle Kingdom”. Negative perceptions of the film have already taken hold in some of the of Asian markets, and at times based on some contemptable reasoning.
Domestically, it will be very interesting to see how Shang Chi performs. As we recently covered, Hollywood is struggling mightily this summer to regain its steam from pre-pandemic, regardless of what the trade publications might be saying.
