The Price Per Hour of Staying in Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser

The Walt Disney World Resort will soon be home to a new type of experience with the Galactic Starcruiser. It’s not a real cruise, given that it never actually moves. But the role playing “excursion” instead is intended to make you feel as if you’re moving somewhere… specifically a galaxy far, far away.

So how much does it cost, exactly, to feel as if you’re in the Star Wars universe instead of Central Florida?

Disney released the prices today, and it was met with some gasps. Fans on various message boards were shocked by the expensive nature of the experience, while others felt Disney already charges abundantly to the point nothing should shock. So, in an effort to determine just how pricey this Live Action Role Playing Hotel can be, I’ve decided to break down how much you’re paying for the base price experience if it’s you and one partner on the Galactic Starcruiser.

Not including taxes, the minimum cost (only two people) is going to be $4,809. Not only do you get to be on the Starcruiser for two days, though… you also get to visit Batuu at Hollywood Studios, which would normally cost approximately $120 depending on your ticket package, so you’re saving $240. That brings the total cost down to $4,569. However, you’re also going to be in Hollywood Studios as part of your resort itinerary, so that’s time you’re not pretending to be on a spaceship.

Unless I’m crazy, you’re also not going to be enjoying the Star Wars motif while you’re asleep either. You could literally be in a Motel 8 and not know the difference until you wake up. So, assuming that you and your partner sleep 8 hours a night, that’s 32 hours that being in the hotel doesn’t make much difference. Let’s be as generous as possible and say it’s 7 hours for both of you.. now we’re at 28 hours.

You’re also both going to be at Hollywood Studios for about 8 hours each (it could be much more depending on your itinerary). When we add these 16 hours to the 28 hours you’ll be sleeping, we’ve got 44 hours that you will either not be in the Galactic Starcruiser, or you’ll be unconscious. Given that you and your partner will be in the resort for exactly two days, that leaves you with 52 hours of enjoying the Starcruiser, or 26 hours each. However, it’s not a complete two days, as you will be checking in during the afternoon while checking out in the morning.

So, with that understood, you’ll be spending a total of about 22 hours each in the Starcuiser, getting to enjoy the fun of it.

To figure out how much each hour is costing, we can now divide the total amount for the Starcruiser two-person package by the number of hours you’ll be able to enjoy it, after deducting the cost you saved by not having to buy a Hollywood Studios ticket. And that means that the cost per hour aboard the new Star Wars hotel is…

$103.84 per hour.

So is it worth it? Well, that’s subjective. But each person interested is going to have to decide if they’re getting $103.84 value for each hour their aboard. Or, perhaps as we’re seeing with the FastPass situation, this is being aimed at a select demographic that has enough money to just not care.
