Why Was Any Type of Gun Pointed at Someone on Alec Baldwin’s Rust Set in the First Place?

Big questions are beginning to be asked about the Alec Baldwin accident that killed a director and injured another production worker. The 68-year-old Baldwin shot dead Halyna Hutchins, 42, when a prop gun turned out to be loaded. Writer Joel Souza was also injured.

In addition to questions about why a prop gun was loaded (as reported by Daily Mail UK), a more fundamental question needs to be asked:

Why was a gun, of any sort, pointed at another human being during the production of the film?

On almost all entertainment productions, when a gun is called for in a scene, filmmakers will go to whatever lengths necessary to make sure that a firearm is not pointed in the direction of another person or animal. Tricky camera angles are often utilized to make it seem that a gun is pointed at someone, when in reality there is no danger. These efforts are specifically to prevent situations like this in which a “prop gun” turns out to be loaded.

At this point, there are no details released officially about how this tragedy occurred. However, given that Alec Baldwin is being named in various credible news sources as the individual who fired the gun, there are a few things that need to be understood:

  1. Did Alec Baldwin point a firearm at another person or people?
  2. If so, why did Baldwin point the gun at someone other than an actor in a scene?
  3. Did the firearm misfire or did Baldwin pull the trigger purposefully?
  4. Who is the gun handler and why was the gun loaded with real bullets?
  5. Who was in charge of checking the chamber for bullets prior to handing it off to an actor?

All of these are likely being looked into by law enforcement and investigators. For Baldwin, this could be a significant issue, especially given that even an accidental discharge would likely be considered a potential manslaughter charge if protocols were not followed. In standard training, actors and stunt doubles are instructed to treat even toy guns as if they are loaded and real in order to prevent this sort of situation. Having a prop gun pointed at a director is atypical, and not according to how most would train to handle a weapon – loaded or not – on set.

Baldwin may be a victim of circumstance, but serious questions will need to be answered. Expect to see lawsuits and potential criminal charges out of this situation. If the gun had been properly handled, no person would be dead. Major mistakes were made in not only allowing the gun to be loaded, but then for it to be pointed at any human being.

Given the tragic nature of this editorial, condolences are given to the victims in this situation, their families, and those who may have witnessed the situation with no culpability.
