I absolutely love this time of the year as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Being raised in the Bible Belt, I’ve always understood the reason for the season. It has always seemed to me that people are a little nicer, more generous and more loving during this time of year. I especially love to find towns that celebrate this “Christmas Spirit.”
Last Week
Last week I wrote on our quick trip and ride down Memory Lane to Helen, Georgia. We loved this quaint town and it has gone all out with the festive spirit. You’ll love it and so will the younger family members.
This Week
While traveling back from Helen, we wanted to find other towns in North Georgia that go all in/out for Christmas decorations and other festivities. We found it in Dahlonega, Georgia. It was 30-45 minutes northwest of Helen.
The Town Square
Dahlonega downtown square is lit up beautifully. The building at the center of the square is the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site. Dahlonega is the location of the first major gold rush in 1829. The trees surrounding this historic building are full with lights as are the trees lining the streets in front of the stores.

Things To Do
There are several restaurants, shops and the Dahlonega General Store located on the square. One of the best restaurants, located just off of the square, is the Smith House. The food is excellent and the service is always wonderful.
While on the square, there are horse carriage rides offered that give you a different perspective of the town. The carriage is lit up also. If you’re looking for events around the holiday, Dahlonega has a website with all Christmas activities they will be hosting.

Other Small Towns to Visit
Ellijay, Dalton, Ringgold, Rossville, Ft. Oglethorpe and Calhoun are other small towns that we visit on a regular basis. Each town has a “square-like” atmosphere with small locally owned shops and restaurants.
Next Week
My family and I get to spend some much needed quality time with each other as we head to warmer weather and sunny beaches. We’ll be heading to Daytona Beach for a few days and then we’ll ring in the New Year in the Tampa area. I’m sure I’ll have some wonderful experiences to share.
Christmas Day
My Christmas wish is for each of you to have a Merry Christmas. A day that we remember why we celebrate it and to spend time with those we cherish. Love on those that are unlovable. Be thankful in all things. Know that you are loved.
Be blessed and safe travels!!!
