In a stunning turn of events this weekend, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has turbocharged its way to the top of the domestic box office, leaving Disney’s latest venture, Mufasa: The Lion King, in the dust.
This outcome is particularly embarrassing for Disney, considering Mufasa is a sequel to the highly successful 2019 remake of The Lion King, which grossed an impressive $1.6 billion worldwide.

According to Deadline, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 surged ahead with a formidable $62 million opening weekend, nearly doubling Disney’s Mufasa, which debuted with $35 million domestically. Both films are extensions of beloved intellectual properties—Sonic as a direct sequel, and Mufasa serving as both a prequel and sequel to Disney’s 2019 “live action” remake.
However, the disparity in their opening numbers highlights a significant misstep for Disney.
What makes Sonic 3’s victory even more impressive is the fact that Mufasa was released in premium formats, including 3D, IMAX, and Dolby Cinema. These formats typically command higher ticket prices, meaning Mufasa had the potential to generate substantially more revenue per viewer.
Despite this advantage, Sonic not only met but exceeded expectations, outperforming Mufasa by a substantial margin.

Both films defied box office projections, albeit in different ways. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was initially expected to pull in between $55 million and $60 million, while Mufasa was forecasted to bring in around $50 million.
Mufasa managed to make a respectable $87 million internationally, contributing to a global opening weekend total of $122 million, but its domestic underperformance casts a shadow over Disney’s latest endeavor.
Disney has quickly declared Mufasa the number one movie in the world, a statement that is technically accurate on a global scale. However, this title is somewhat misleading, as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has yet to open in international markets. The third installment in the Sonic franchise is slated for an international release on December 25, which promises to further intensify the competition.

On the reception front, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been a hit with both critics and audiences alike. The film boasts a Certified Fresh rating of 86% from critics and an impressive 98% approval score from audiences, earning it a Verified “Hot” badge on review aggregator platform Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, Mufasa has struggled to garner similar acclaim, holding a “rotten” 57% rating from critics while still maintaining an 89% audience approval score.
The stark difference in critical reception underscores another layer of Sonic 3’s success. While Mufasa grapples with mixed reviews for its photorealistic approach, Sonic has delighted fans and critics with its vibrant energy and faithful adaptation of the beloved character’s universe.

Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King faces an uphill battle to reclaim its standing, especially as international audiences prepare to view the film alongside the already dominant Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Paramount’s speedy hedgehog is not just winning the box office race; it’s redefining expectations and setting a high bar for sequels and spin-offs in the competitive landscape of modern cinema.
As the holiday season continues, all eyes will remain on how these two giants perform in the coming weeks. For now, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 celebrates a well-deserved domestic triumph, while Disney must regroup and strategize to overcome this unexpected setback.
