Disney is showing no signs of slowing down its live-action remake machine, as it has appointed Paramount executive Daria Cercek, who recently oversaw Disney’s major holiday competitor Sonic The Hedgehog 3, to head its Disney Live Action Theatrical Division.

Cercek will now spearhead Disney’s efforts to bring more of its classic animated films into the live-action realm. According to Deadline, Cercek will be “responsible for spearheading all aspects of Disney Live Action’s theatrical slate, driving the development and production of films inspired by the studio’s iconic stories and characters, and championing original projects.”
This move comes at a critical time for Disney, as its live-action remakes have seen diminishing returns at the box office. While early efforts like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King each raked in over $1 billion globally, more recent releases like The Little Mermaid and Mufasa: The Lion King have struggled to reach similar heights. Industry insiders are already bracing for another potential flop with the upcoming Snow White remake, starring Rachel Zegler, which has generated more buzz for its controversies than its cinematic promise.

Cercek’s hiring is particularly intriguing given her involvement with Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film went head-to-head with Disney’s Mufasa last holiday season, and despite Mufasa securing premium formats like IMAX and Dolby, it just barely edged out Sonic at the domestic box office. With Mufasa reportedly carrying a hefty $200 million budget compared to Sonic 3’s $122 million, Disney’s decision to bring Cercek on board could be seen as an attempt to poach talent from the competition after recognizing the strength of her projects.
In her new role, Cercek will report directly to David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios. She will also oversee a team that includes Sam Dickerman (EVP, Production), Allison Erlikhman (SVP, Production), and Jessica Virtue (SVP, Production).
“Daria’s unique creative talent, passion for storytelling, and deep experience working with world-class filmmakers fits perfectly with Disney’s mission to create unforgettable cinematic experiences that will stand the test of time,” Greenbaum said in a statement. “I am thrilled to welcome her to the team and look forward to the incredible contributions she will undoubtedly make.”

Cercek echoed the sentiment, expressing her excitement about joining Disney.
“Disney has long set the standard for timeless storytelling, bringing to life some of the most beloved characters and stories that have captivated generations of audiences around the world,” she said. “Like so many, I grew up inspired by the magic of Disney, so it is a true privilege to join Alan Bergman, David, and this incredible team. I look forward to working alongside them, and today’s most visionary filmmakers, to build on the studio’s extraordinary legacy.”
Cercek’s track record at Paramount speaks for itself. Under her leadership, the studio saw significant success with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3 and Scream VI. She also played a key role in developing major releases like Gladiator II, A Quiet Place: Day One, and The Lost City. Her experience with balancing franchise films and original projects could be exactly what Disney needs to rejuvenate its live-action division.

However, the question remains: can even a seasoned executive like Cercek reverse the downward trend of Disney’s live-action remakes? The audience fatigue with these reimaginings is palpable, and while the early films thrived on nostalgia, newer entries have struggled to justify their existence beyond being mere cash grabs.
Disney’s upcoming live action slate includes Snow White, Lilo & Stitch, Freakier Friday, Moana, and even a The Devil Wears Prada sequel. Whether these films can recapture the magic—or if Cercek’s influence will steer Disney toward more original content—remains to be seen.

For now, Disney appears committed to its live-action roadmap, betting that new leadership will help navigate the increasingly choppy waters of blockbuster filmmaking.

Remember when they hired Chloe Zhao just so they could say they hired a woman of color, but they didn’t allow her to destroy the Earth like she wanted to do?
I expect things to go similar to that.
Zjow and Surcheck. How awesomely diverse disney. So awesome. So, so awesome.
I’m amazed at how my girls are recoiling from all this crap. They’re still pretty and seem to be getting some early impressions that should stay with them through life. I’m more than happy to galvanize their rejection of disney all things of similar ilk.
Pretty young.
I needs to take a minute or two to edit before I hits the

I don’t understand their obsession
Dude. I think, like a lot of folk on here I started on “Cosmic Book News”, quickly pivoted into “Bounding into..” and ultimately moved to this site. I’d randomly check in on the other two. I’ve had a renaissance on “Cosmic” (although NO ONE seems to ever comment anymore), I’ve given up on “bounding”. What a worthless, meatless, site now. Utterly vacuous.
The problem is not the director, DEI destroyed Disney, Everyone is useless, unless they give absolute power to a good leader and start firing people its not gonna work
