A new rumor has surfaced from Film Threat’s Chris Gore and Alan Ng, suggesting that Disney has been quietly looking to sell Star Wars for the past seven months—but reportedly, there have been no takers.

Gore, who has industry connections outside the media sphere, claims a trusted source in the financial sector informed him that Disney has been putting out feelers to gauge interest in selling Star Wars or potentially Lucasfilm as a whole.

However, despite months of searching, the entertainment giant has allegedly failed to secure an interested buyer.

A Quiet Effort to Offload Star Wars

Gore was careful to clarify that this information comes from a single source and remains unconfirmed. However, he decided to bring the rumor to light in the hopes of encouraging others within the industry to corroborate or provide additional details.

“This is from a friend who is not in the nerd space, not in the YouTube space, not a media person—this is a friend in the world of finance,” Gore stated. “A trusted individual who says for seven months they have put feelers out about selling Star Wars.”

It remains unclear whether Disney is looking to sell the entire Star Wars brand, Lucasfilm as a whole, or just select assets. Given Disney’s deep integration with Star Wars through Disney+, theme park attractions, merchandise, and licensing deals, any potential sale would likely be complex.

No Buyers Interested?

The most surprising aspect of the rumor isn’t just that Disney may be looking to part with the franchise it acquired from George Lucas for $4 billion—it’s that, according to Gore’s source, there are no interested buyers.

Gore emphasized, “They have been shopping it for seven months and can’t find a buyer.”

This raises questions about whether the high asking price, contractual entanglements, or the current state of the Star Wars franchise under Disney’s leadership are dissuading potential buyers. The franchise has seen significant downs in recent years, with multiple projects that have struggled to resonate with audiences.

To be more blunt, Star Wars hasn’t had a successful property in years.

What Would a Sale Look Like?

If Disney were to sell Star Wars, the specifics of such a deal would likely be intricate. Alan Ng likened it to selling the Playboy Mansion with Hugh Hefner still residing inside (something that happened!), emphasizing how deeply Disney is embedded in the brand.

“Are you really buying Lucasfilm or are you just owner in name only and Disney will still run things?” Ng questioned.

One possibility is that Disney could sell only certain rights, similar to how Marvel’s character rights have been distributed among multiple studios over the years. Sony, for example, retains the film rights to Spider-Man and its associated characters, while Universal holds the theme park rights for Marvel attractions in Florida. If Disney is indeed looking to offload Star Wars, it could be considering a similar arrangement rather than a complete divestiture.

Waiting for Confirmation

While this remains unverified, Gore’s intent in sharing the rumor is to encourage industry insiders to come forward with additional information.

“Let’s do an investigation together and get the full story,” he urged.

At this point, there has been no official statement from Disney, and no major industry sources have corroborated the claim. However, if true, it would mark a significant shift in Disney’s approach to one of its most valuable intellectual properties.

For now, the entertainment world is left to speculate: Is Disney truly looking to sell Star Wars? And if so, why has no one stepped up to buy it?

This would be hilarious if true. It’d be a tacit admission that they screw up and killed one of the most popular IP’s in history. That woke is the Kiss of Death everyone but the woke know it is. But I don’t have any faith in rumors. I want the hard facts and the raw truth as I always have. Better to rip that Band-Aid of delusional hope off and be done with it.

Bunny With A Keyboard

Obi-Wan was wrong. I found a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

TTTRRRUUUTTTHHH

No matter how much polish you try to put on it, a turd is always just a turd. That’s what Disney turned Star Wars in to, so it’s no surprise that they have no buyers.

drakiesan

Seems strange… I would think that Tencent would buy it outright…

Mad Lemming

Why would they? They can’t make money off of it now thanks to Disney. Nor would the Party let them buy it. It’s a Western IP and they demand Chinese IPs be elevated above all others.

I read that George Lucas was seeking to regain the Star Wars IP back.
Either way, Disney made it into a BLM / lesbian / feminist brand, and, financially, it predictably failed.
If Star Wars was bought by Elon Musk, he’d MSWGA!

Nah. He does not have the experience. He cannot even bring Xwitter to be profitable which I do not blame him for because the old one was a tool, soft power for left leaning powers. They made its existence possible.
He would not make it better.

Mex Mexican

It is profitable actually

skinnyelephant

Xwitter? It barely breaks even according to various sources. I will not argue about declining worth because it was never worth 40 billions, but it lost a lot of companies who paid for advertising due to Musk not being in their elite club of progressive values religion.
It might not lose a lot or not lose at all, but it is far from making decent profit.

Sad to see you constructed a pay wall. Trying to turn a profit this way will, over time, transform you into the Access Media, because you’ll sell out more and more, every year.
Sell out for “content”. And, of course, the temptation to accept bribes, to go soft on this story or that story. You will slowly become the Shill Media.

If you think about it 98% of the shows and movies they made in the last decade were only getting worse. From Force Awakens, to Last Blue milk drinker, to “I am Ray Palpatine.” They probably have much more info regarding every show they have made. And those numbers must be depressing.
SW does not make money. But if we have to be accurate, KK does not make money. Useless coffee bringer should have never gotten this job.
If they do not sell it, the main question should be when does it start bringing money?

I believe I hate modern day pet food commercials =/> than any of disney’s output, as of late. The absolutely worst, schmaltzy, deutchy cesspool of the advert world. Even the corporations that mix horse meat, rat excrement, and random doll parts advertise their kibble as “market price” now.
Another unintended consequence of the me-me-me, childless market that covets cats more than fellow human counterparts, and the resulting ‘connections’ gained from engaging said counterparts.
MEowwww.

With or without Disney, everyone knows Lucasfilm is cancer.
