In June of 2024, Danny Elfman—the legendary talent behind classic spooky soundtracks like The Nightmare Before Christmas and the original 1989 Batman—was announced as the composer for Universal Studios’ Dark Universe. He finally shared his thoughts on the matter earlier this March.

Danny Elfman’s Legacy in Film Composition

In his decades-long career, Danny Elfman has left an indelible mark on film and television music. Elfman’s name and work are almost symbiotic with Tim Burton’s, having composed the scores for Batman (1989), The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and more.

His talent in crafting eerie, atmospheric music has made him a sought-after composer for horror and fantasy genres. His past involvement with theme park attractions—such as The Simpsons Ride and Men in Black: Alien Attack—demonstrates his ability to create immersive musical experiences, making him a fitting choice for Dark Universe.

What is Dark Universe?

Dark Universe is one of the highly anticipated themed lands within Epic Universe, set to open in 2025 at Universal Orlando Resort. Inspired by Universal’s classic monster films, the attraction will bring Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula, The Wolfman, and The Mummy to life in a way never before seen in a theme park setting. Visitors can expect gothic architecture, eerie landscapes, and venues that blend horror and adventure.

Universal has had a long history with these monsters, and Dark Universe will serve as a tribute to their everlasting legacy. According to Theme Park Insider, it also aims to capitalize on the public’s fascination with horror, drawing in both longtime fans and new audiences. Elfman’s score will play a crucial role in shaping the land’s haunting yet thrilling atmosphere.

Elfman’s Approach to the Dark Universe Score

In his statement, Danny Elfman described his involvement in Dark Universe as both an honor and a nostalgic journey back to his childhood.

“When I got the call from Universal to work on the music to their new Dark Universe I was, to say the least, more than up for it. It was such a treat working on this project. Not only did I get to work with a great bunch of enthusiastic creative people, but I got to travel back to my own childhood and revisit my original aspirations. And while the attractions are all unique and original, they use characters that I have loved my whole life, such as the Universal Film Legends: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolfman, and The Mummy, who show up at different times throughout the park experience. I felt both honored and energized to have been chosen for this wonderful project. I hope you, the listener, feel that I did it justice.”

Elfman’s signature style—with its sweeping orchestral arrangements and eerie undertones—is expected to complement Dark Universe perfectly.

Given his previous work on gothic and horror-inspired films, his score will likely evoke both a sense of dread and excitement, immersing guests in the world of classic monsters. The music is expected to be heard throughout the land, enhancing the rides, attractions, and overall ambiance.

The Lawsuit Controversy

While Elfman’s involvement in Dark Universe is a significant career milestone, it is likely to be overshadowed by legal battles that have surfaced in recent years.

In 2023, composer Nomi Abadi filed a defamation lawsuit against Danny Elfman, alleging that his statements to Rolling Stone misrepresented past sexual harassment claims made by her, which had been settled in 2019. Elfman denied the allegations. Additionally, a separate sexual assault lawsuit against him was dismissed in 2024 due to insufficient evidence and expired statutes of limitations.

The controversy has sparked debates in the entertainment industry, with some questioning whether Universal should have chosen Elfman for this project. Others argue that his work should be judged separately from his legal troubles. Regardless, the lawsuit looms over what should have been a purely celebratory moment in his career.

Conclusion

Danny Elfman’s contribution to Dark Universe adds a level of prestige to the project, reinforcing the park’s commitment to honoring the legacy of Universal’s monsters. His enthusiasm for the score, combined with his track record in horror-themed compositions, suggests that the music will be one of the land’s standout feature, even if the controversy surrounding him complicates the narrative.

As Epic Universe prepares for its grand opening, the question remains: Will Dark Universe be remembered for its immersive attractions and Elfman’s hauntingly beautiful score, or will the legal controversies cast a long shadow over the project?
