Epic Universe, the new theme park coming to Orlando, Florida, is planned to open by Summer of 2025 and comes with a price tag of $1 billion for NBC Universal. The park’s construction was paused for over a year, but is now back into full swing. The cost of the park’s construction may seem lower than original estimations… Disney Park’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge expansions in Disneyland and Hollywood Studios had estimated $600 million price tagsĀ each… and may have gone over budget. Still, plans do not seem to have been downgraded. Epic Universe will still feature Super Nintendo World, extensive fountain infrastructure, and a celestial-themed hotel.

Another surprising claim is that Epic Universe will be the largest theme park in the United States. The acreage makes sense, but it will be interesting if that claim holds true for actual theme park area and capacity.

In another sign of how much Universal Studios is catching up with Disney Parks, CEO Jeff Shell claimed in an earnings call yesterday that the Universal Studios Parks worldwide had the most profitable quarter ever in the final segment of 2021. That’s hugely impressive given a pandemic and the fact that Universal has not been going the route of tiered guest experiences to the same degree of Disney.

Most of Universal’s major new attractions have been well-received by the public, so Epic Universe is likely to generate continued enthusiasm and anticipation.
