Epic Universe is about to open, and that’s going to be very bad for Disney.

As the grand opening of Universal Studios Orlando Resort’s Epic Universe approaches on May 22, 2025, anticipation is building for what promises to be a transformative addition to Central Florida’s tourism landscape. This marks the first major theme park opening in Florida since 1999, signaling a significant expansion in the region’s entertainment offerings. It now appears that Universal Studios will utterly transform the theme park industry in less than a month, and not just for Florida… but perhaps for the entire world.

Epic Universe introduces five immersive worlds: Celestial Park, Super Nintendo World, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, and Dark Universe. These areas feature over 50 attractions, including cutting-edge rides, live entertainment, and themed dining experiences. Innovations such as facial recognition for ride access and augmented reality elements set a new standard for theme park experiences.

The opening of Epic Universe is projected to have a substantial economic impact on Central Florida. Estimates suggest the park will generate approximately $2 billion in its first year and create over 17,500 jobs. Over the next decade, the park is expected to contribute around $11 billion to Orlando’s GDP, benefiting local businesses, hospitality, and retail sectors.

Orlando, already a premier tourist destination, welcomed over 74 million visitors last year. The addition of Epic Universe is anticipated to attract millions more, further solidifying the city’s status as a global entertainment hub . This influx is expected to boost occupancy rates in hotels, increase patronage in restaurants, and drive growth in ancillary services throughout the region. Not all is wonderful, however, as Disney World has been offering significant discounts and benefits for later this year, and even more significantly in 2026. This would suggest that the “rising tide lifts all boats” principle isn’t fully at play. Epic Universe is likely to draw significant market share away from The Walt Disney World Resort. That could be why we’re seeing Disney drop it’s ticket prices for the first time in modern history!

To accommodate the expected surge in visitors, significant infrastructure enhancements have been implemented. A $315 million extension of Kirkman Road now connects the existing Universal Orlando Resort to the new Epic Universe site, improving traffic flow and accessibility . Additionally, the development includes new transportation options and pedestrian-friendly pathways to facilitate visitor movement.

Epic Universe’s debut intensifies the competition between Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World. By introducing unique attractions and leveraging popular intellectual properties, Universal aims to capture a larger share of the theme park market. This competitive environment is expected to spur innovation and investment across the industry, enhancing the overall visitor experience in Central Florida. Consumers are the winners here, Disney likely the loser in terms of revenue… and Universal Studios is the shocking usurper of everything people thought they knew about theme parks!
