EPCOT’s newest premium upcharge has arrived, and once again, it’s not for the families who built the brand. Hot on the heels of the controversial announcement of the adults-only Spaceship Earth Lounge GEO-82, Walt Disney World has announced a new “Enchanting Extra”.

According to theme park news site Blog Mickey, the experience includes prime window seating for “Luminous: The Symphony of Us,” sommelier-selected bubbly, themed cocktails, and light fare. The cost? $179 per adult, plus tax and gratuity—and that’s excluding the park admission.

The new offering is billed as a “sparkling conclusion to your day,” but for many longtime Disney fans, it’s yet another sign of something else ending entirely: the era of family-first design.

Disney Doubles Down on Adults-Only Spaces

This isn’t just another high-end lounge. As we at That Park Place previously reported, the Spaceship Earth Lounge was originally described in early Disney Parks Blog drafts as “a zen space for families to gather.” But shortly after publication, those references were quietly scrubbed and replaced with language aimed squarely at adults. The final version offered only an upscale, 21-and-over retreat, complete with sleek metallic furnishings, geometric lighting, and mood-forward cocktails. Families were, quite literally, written out.

Now, Disney has doubled down with a fireworks package clearly tailored to the DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) crowd and social media influencers. Again, as previously reported here at That Park Place, the lounge’s limited capacity and “intimate” design signal exclusivity above all else. If you want a picture-perfect view of the fireworks from inside EPCOT’s most iconic structure, you’d better be prepared to pay a luxury price—and leave the kids behind.

It’s not that elegant experiences for adults have no place in Disney parks, but what we’re seeing here is part of a broader shift. From after-hours parties and hard-ticket holiday events to boutique dining and VIP tours, Disney has been increasingly tilting its offerings toward those with deep pockets and no dependents. GEO-82 isn’t an outlier—it’s the blueprint.

Champagne, Bites, and an Exclusion Clause

For $180 (plus tax and tip), guests will get one alcoholic drink, a few appetizers, and access to a room that’s already inside a park they paid to enter. There’s also no actual guarantee of fireworks. Disney makes it clear that weather or operational issues may prevent the show entirely—without refunds. So if the sky doesn’t cooperate, the magical finale becomes a costly cocktail hour with background music and mood lighting.

Meanwhile, families—the demographic Walt Disney once declared the heart of his parks—are increasingly priced out or pushed aside. With children excluded from experiences like GEO-82, and costs climbing across the board, the modern Disney vacation is beginning to resemble a luxury resort more than a theme park. Add in mobile ordering, Genie+, and premium access passes, and it’s not hard to see why some fans feel the magic is increasingly gated behind paywalls.

The Spaceship Earth Lounge was a structure originally dedicated to the journey of human communication and humanity’s shared future. What once stood for unity and progress is now a venue for exclusive indulgence. Walt Disney spoke often of creating spaces where parents and children could play and dream together. Today’s leadership appears more interested in champagne flights and velvet rope experiences.

Some will argue that Disney is simply evolving with its audience. But the question remains—which audience are they evolving for? Families with young kids, or child-free adults with expendable income and a love of curated Instagram aesthetics?

If the Spaceship Earth Lounge is any indication, the answer is clear. And for many fans, especially those with families in tow, it’s a sobering reminder that Disney’s most magical moments may no longer include them.
