June has arrived, and with it comes the return of Disney’s annual PRIDE celebration at Walt Disney World. Guests visiting Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom will immediately notice rainbow-colored touches across the resort—from photo backdrops to updated murals and limited-time offerings.

Each park now features visual displays meant to signal support for identity-based communities, following the company’s ongoing tradition of highlighting these initiatives during PRIDE month.

At Magic Kingdom, the mural appears on the well-known Purple Wall near Tomorrowland Terrace. This year’s design includes a rainbow motif using the colors of the “Progress Flag,” with a purple Mickey Mouse icon layered in front of the display. The word “Love” is placed in the center in an off-white tone.

EPCOT features a similar mural located near Connections Eatery in the World Celebration area. The design incorporates the base of Spaceship Earth, with colorful heart-shaped pylons emerging upward in various flag colors. The word “Love” appears prominently in the center.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, guests can find a mural setup on Grand Avenue next to Ice Cold Hydraulics. The display shows Mickey Mouse-shaped balloons styled in assorted flag patterns arranged as a bouquet, with the word “Love” and a Mickey silhouette featured in the center.

Animal Kingdom’s mural is located on the walkway leading to Pandora – The World of Avatar, across from Tiffins Restaurant. Painted across a set of backstage gates, the design once again includes the “Progress Flag” color palette, the word “Love,” and a black Mickey silhouette replacing the “O.”

In addition to the park decor, Disney has released its 2025 PRIDE Collection of merchandise, which is now available at retail locations throughout the resort. These items are part of a broader push that the company undertakes each June, consistent with its recent marketing and branding strategy.

While these installations are now a familiar sight each summer, they often lead to deeper questions about guest interest, merchandise performance, and the company’s positioning both domestically and abroad.

Overflowing 2024 Pride Merch Found at Disney’s Cast Connection

While the decor makes headlines, the Disney World PRIDE merchandise tells a different story.

In August of last year, That Park Place staff visited Cast Connection, Disney’s exclusive store where cast members can purchase overstocked and unsold merchandise at drastically reduced prices. What we found was difficult to ignore: a staggering amount of unsold PRIDE-themed products had made their way into clearance bins.

Even with major markdowns—often up to 75% off—cast members weren’t exactly rushing to grab them.

This overflow calls into question just how popular the PRIDE merchandise truly is among guests. Disney dedicates prominent floor space in its retail locations to these products every June, but the leftovers suggest the demand may not match the scale of the supply.

If the merchandise was selling out at full price, it wouldn’t wind up on deep discount two months later.

Disney’s PRIDE Push in America With a Different Story Overseas

What makes this year’s Disney World PRIDE celebration particularly eyebrow-raising is its timing.

In May 2025, Disney confirmed plans to move forward with a new theme park in Abu Dhabi—a region where laws are significantly less friendly toward the very communities Disney is promoting stateside. In the United Arab Emirates, expressions of identity-based lifestyles can carry severe legal consequences, including fines, imprisonment, and deportation.

Under the UAE’s legal framework, same-sex relationships are criminalized. For instance, Article 177 of Dubai’s Penal Code prescribes up to 10 years’ imprisonment, while Article 80 of Abu Dhabi’s Penal Code allows for up to 14 years’ imprisonment for engaging in such partnerships.

Additionally, the Federal Penal Code criminalizes acts deemed as “voluntary debasement,” which can encompass same-sex intimacy, punishable by up to one year in prison.

That presents a striking contrast: In Florida, the company is proudly celebrating a month dedicated to personal identity. But in Abu Dhabi, where such displays would be met with hostility, Disney appears to have no plans to challenge the local status quo.

So far, the company has remained silent on whether its Abu Dhabi park will feature the same PRIDE Month branding, murals, or merchandise that are rolled out annually in the United States. Realistically, the odds of that happening are near zero—any such celebration would directly conflict with local laws and cultural expectations.

This double standard isn’t lost on observers.

How can a company present itself as a champion for inclusion in one market while actively expanding into a region where those same values are punishable by law?

Business Strategy or Virtue Signaling?

The repeated PRIDE campaigns in Disney parks may play well on social media and with media outlets eager to celebrate corporate virtue. But when unsold merchandise ends up in clearance bins and international expansions suggest different priorities, the underlying motivation starts to look less like authentic advocacy and more like strategic branding.

Some parkgoers have voiced support for the company’s public messaging, while others note the contradiction of spotlighting one community in Florida while ignoring their plight overseas. The gap between what Disney says and where it puts its money is growing wider—especially when hundreds of millions are being invested in regions with restrictive laws.

And for those wondering whether this year’s PRIDE merchandise will fly off the shelves, past years suggest otherwise. Disney may be celebrating with vibrant murals and photo ops, but the cast member clearance section could be gearing up for another summer inventory boost.
