James Gunn has made it known that he’s not interested in fueling fanboy firestorms. As speculation mounted about competition this summer between Warner Bros.’ Superman and Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps—which are set to release just two weeks apart in 2025—the DC Studios co-head took to social media to put the rumors and rivalries to rest.
In a post on Threads, Gunn addressed the supposed tension between the two blockbuster franchises.

“They come out 2 weeks after us, there’s room for us both,” Gunn said. I love my friends at Marvel. You can find whatever discussions you’d want to find online. I’d focus on all the positivity around the films instead of getting sucked up in online fan wars.”
The statement comes amid an uptick in online arguments about which film will dominate the box office and whether Gunn—now firmly entrenched in DC’s creative leadership—still harbors loyalty to his old Marvel roots. After all, Gunn directed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (plus Christmas special) before making the jump to co-head DC Studios alongside Peter Safran.

But for Gunn, it’s not a matter of competition—it’s collaboration. His response aligns with his past remarks that good superhero storytelling, no matter the studio, should be celebrated rather than used to stoke tribalism.
Fandoms at Odds?
The timing of Gunn’s comment is no accident. Both Superman and Fantastic Four are tentpole projects meant to revitalize their respective cinematic universes. Superman, directed by Gunn and slated for July 11, 2025, marks the first official entry in the new DCU. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set for July 25, 2025, is expected to reintroduce Marvel’s iconic family of heroes to the big screen under the stewardship of director Matt Shakman.

Naturally, comparisons between the two are inevitable—especially with both projects claiming summer tentpole status and built-in fanbases. But Gunn’s comments emphasize unity over rivalry, likely in part due to his personal friendships with many still at Marvel Studios.
A Quiet Rejection of Fan Division
Rather than stoking the flames of inter-fandom warfare, Gunn’s message is a rare call for civility in the often-fractious world of online entertainment debate. He’s one of the few major Hollywood figures willing to publicly remind fans that it’s okay to like both.
And in an era where even the press leans into conflict-driven headlines, Gunn’s approach is refreshingly sincere. It’s also a savvy PR move: building goodwill across both camps ensures Superman gets judged on its own merits—not just as a Marvel counterstrike.
What It Means Going Forward
As the superhero genre faces both saturation and reinvention, leaders like Gunn may be vital in guiding not just storytelling but tone—encouraging fans to support creativity instead of gatekeeping it.
With both Superman and Fantastic Four on the horizon, fans may finally get what they’ve long deserved: two great films, two studios trying to win audiences on quality—not conflict.
