It’s been nearly six years since Mahershala Ali stepped onto the stage at San Diego Comic-Con and shocked the Marvel fandom by donning a Blade cap, officially taking up the mantle of the vampire slayer once played by Wesley Snipes. But despite the initial fanfare, the Mahershala Ali Blade reboot has become one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most infamous slow burns—troubled by delays, creative turnover, and mounting fan frustration.

And now, it seems the Oscar-winning actor has had enough waiting.

At the New York premiere of his new film Jurassic World Rebirth, Ali was asked when Blade might finally begin filming. His response was short but sharp.

“Call Marvel,” he said. “I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.”

That simple quote, delivered without elaboration, speaks volumes. It’s the clearest indication yet that Ali is growing impatient with the studio’s inability to get the long-delayed project off the ground. And considering the timeline, it’s hard to blame him.

A Six-Year Nightmare for the Daywalker

The Mahershala Ali Blade project was first announced in 2019 during Marvel Studios’ now-legendary Hall H presentation. That same event unveiled WandaVision, Loki, Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness—all of which have long since released. But Blade? It’s been stuck circling the runway for years.

The film has seen multiple directors come and go, with Bassam Tariq exiting in 2022, followed by Yann Demange’s recent departure. Actors Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo were previously attached to the project but have also confirmed they’re no longer involved.

Delroy Lindo told Entertainment Weekly back in April: “It was really exciting conceptually… but for whatever reason, it just went off the rails.”

Meanwhile, Marvel removed Blade from its release calendar in late 2024 after previously delaying it from its original 2023 release date. The most recent placeholder had been November 7, 2025—but that’s now gone.

A Subtle Rebuke from Ali?

Ali’s brief remark feels like a quiet but deliberate shot across the bow. Rather than offer platitudes or studio-approved optimism, he cut straight to the point: he’s ready, Marvel isn’t. It’s the kind of public statement that carries weight coming from a two-time Academy Award winner—and someone who joined this franchise with great excitement.

His last major comment on the project was in December 2023, when he told the media he was “really encouraged with the direction.” Now, more than a year and a half later and that enthusiasm has faded into firm, almost impatient clarity.

While Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige continues to insist the project is moving forward—saying at D23 Brazil that they “love the character” and remain committed to Ali’s portrayal—those words are beginning to ring hollow. The actor has kept his side of the bargain. The studio hasn’t.

Will Blade Ever Rise?

With Marvel Studios retooling its entire cinematic roadmap under increasing pressure from Disney leadership and struggling audience engagement, Blade’s future remains as murky as ever.

But if there’s one thing that’s crystal clear now, it’s that Mahershala Ali is ready. It’s Marvel that’s running late.
