The first reactions to James Gunn’s Superman are flying in, and to the surprise of many—including longtime skeptics of Warner Bros. and the DCU reboot—they’re overwhelmingly positive.
During a special promotional event in Brazil, attendees were treated to the first 30 minutes of Superman—the film formerly known as Superman: Legacy. While an embargo was likely in place, that didn’t stop several influencers, press members, and fans from sharing their early impressions online. And according to them, James Gunn may have pulled off the impossible.
Superman reactions described a fresh, heartfelt take on the Man of Steel that’s winning people over from frame one.
No way I saw the first 30 minutes of Superman after feeling so hopeless the entire day. Needless to say it was DAMN BEAUTIFUL. Time absolutely flew by…

“No way I saw the first 30 minutes of Superman after feeling so hopeless the entire day,” wrote one attendee on X. “Needless to say it was DAMN BEAUTIFUL. Time absolutely flew by…”
That enthusiastic sentiment was echoed across social media in a flurry of posts celebrating David Corenswet’s performance, Gunn’s tone (which reportedly is a complete about face from the bleak dreary tone of Zack Snyder), and the visual spectacle of Superman’s flight.

“The first 30 mins of #Superman is so f****** good! A fresh new perspective to take the character,” wrote another. “David is SO GOOD switching from Clark to Superman and the chemistry with Rachel! We’ve seen a lot and yet WE HAVEN’T SEEN A LOT.”
Another early viewer added, “I GOT THE CHANCE TO WATCH THE FIRST 30 MINS OF SUPERMAN AND IT WAS AMAZING!!! @corenswet @JamesGunn HAS DONE IT, SUPER STOKED FOR THIS ONE!!!”
Critics and influencers in attendance particularly highlighted the new flight sequences as standout moments, with one comparing the experience to Top Gun: Maverick in terms of kinetic energy and immersion.

These reactions follow James Gunn’s own promise that Superman would combine classic superhero mythos with his signature blend of “epic action, humor, and heart.” So far, audiences seem to agree.

Corenswet, best known for Hollywood and the upcoming Twisters, is earning praise for his nuanced portrayal of both Superman and Clark Kent. Early commentary suggests that his ability to switch personas quickly and convincingly—while maintaining charisma and emotional resonance—might be one of the film’s greatest strengths. Rachel Brosnahan is also getting early buzz for her chemistry with Corenswet in the role of Lois Lane.

Superman also features a stacked supporting cast including Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher. The movie theatrically kicks off the new DCU under Gunn and Peter Safran’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate.
The official synopsis describes Superman as a return to optimism, focusing on a hero “driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.” That’s a stark contrast to the grimmer portrayals that dominated recent years. That pivot appears to be resonating.

While these early reactions may be wrapped up in the thrill of exclusivity, they offer Warner Bros. and DC something they desperately need: genuine excitement. And this time, it isn’t just from the die-hard faithful. With glowing endorsements pouring in from early press and influencers, Gunn’s Superman may be on track to leap over skepticism in a single bound.

Of course it’s important to note that critics, influencers, and invited guests aren’t always the most reliable source when it comes to early reactions. The true test for Superman will start once reactions from the general public start pouring in.
