In reality, factoring in theater splits (where studios retain only about 45-50% of gross) and other fees, the film likely requires $800 million or more worldwide to truly profit. This is a claim James Gunn has repeatedly refuted while offering no actual numbers to back up his statements. If overseas markets continue to underperform, it could severely hobble James Gunn and Peter Safran’s ambitious “Gods and Monsters” slate, leaving DC overly reliant on domestic audiences in a jam-packed 2025 lineup.

For all its faults, Man of Steel is the better movie. I wasn’t disappointed by Superman 2025, but there was nothing moving about it. Man of Steel had inspiring moments and a much more complex performance… and so much less monologuing.

I really missed some sort of intro and the flashbacks into challenges of Clark growing up strike me as being different than the typical origin story which have ONE defining moment (Uncle Ben’s death, Bruce Wayne’s parents being killed, being blasted by a cosmic storm).

Just having a little text on the screen doesn’t replace that.

Maybe Gunn should haven’t worried so much about changing the tagline from “… and the American way!” in hopes of softening the entry into international markets and being less offensive. As if the American way isn’t admired and other countries aren’t envious of the American way.

At least we now know Sups can get drunk if he goes to a red sun. The last part, with Gen Z Supergirl, was a pretty depressing setup for that movie.

So far things are not looking up for Gunn’s DC.
