Epic Universe at Universal Orlando officially opened on May 22 2025, featuring Celestial Park as its cosmic-themed hub. The signature coaster in this area is Stardust Racers, a dual‑launch racing coaster manufactured by Mack Rides. It hits speeds of 62 mph, climbs 133 ft, and spans about 5,000 ft of track, including a twisting inversion dubbed the “Celestial Spin” where the two trains interlock mid-air. But new lore have given the backstory to the coaster’s creation, and as the story goes, Back to the Future’s Doc Brown traveled through time to assist the builders with his own technology.

Technically, each side of the coaster runs up to four trains, with five cars per train and two rows of two riders per car—20 riders per train total. The trains’ onboard lights accentuate a comet-like visual, especially at night, since the track remains unlit.

According to Universal’s published lore, the fictional Celestians, inhabitants of Celestial Park, once harnessed comet energy to travel between worlds. After the Chronos portals were opened, comet travel became recreational. Chronocosmic Engineers then began containing comets to race them on Stardust Racers.

From Universal’s Complete Guide to the Lore & Stories of Celestial Park, “It took the Chronocosmic Engineers a little puzzling to figure out how to stabilize the comets for racing. Luckily, a certain doctor happened to travel through the portal to Celestial Park and offer his technology as an aid. Keep an eye on your ride vehicle for a hint about this doc’s identity!”

That “certain doctor” is hinted to be Dr. Emmett Brown from Back to the Future. The flux capacitor mounted on the back of each train signals the connection. While Universal has not branded this as an official crossover, team members reportedly confirmed to guests that Doc Brown contributed to Celestial Park’s design.

Fans and theme‑park journalists have noted that the inclusion of the flux capacitor is a subtle Easter egg linking Universal’s Back to the Future legacy with the new attraction. It ties back to the former Back to the Future: The Ride, which closed at Universal Studios Florida in 2007.

Within the queue and surrounding theming, guests can observe design motifs reminiscent of time‑travel controls and flux‑capacitor sketches that reinforce the implied connection. Some guests also report hearing faint musical cues in the ride soundtrack that echo Alan Silvestri’s original Back to the Future score.

Although there is no official mention of Doc Brown by name in Epic Universe branding, the lore, visuals, and confirmations by team members suggest his behind‑the‑scenes influence as a “secret inventor.” This connection enhances the ride’s storytelling appeal, offering fans of Back to the Future a link to the broader multiverse while still preserving Celestial Park’s original identity.
