In a recent podcast appearance on Toon’d In with Jim Cummings, actor Alan Tudyk opened up about a lesser-known chapter in his career involving the 2004 sci-fi thriller I, Robot.

Known for his versatile voice work and motion capture roles, Tudyk shared how his performance as the robot Sonny apparently stole the spotlight in test screenings—so much so that it resulted in him being sidelined from the film’s promotional efforts seemingly for overshadowing the film’s star Will Smith. This revelation adds an intriguing layer to the film’s history, hinting at the delicate egos and studio politics that often shape Hollywood blockbusters.

Tudyk, who has since become a fan favorite in projects like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and various Disney animation features, recounted the incident on the Toon’d In with Jim Cummings podcast. He explained that during audience test screenings, viewers rated characters on appeal and likability.

To his surprise, feedback came back that his robotic character was scoring higher than the movie’s top-billed star, Will Smith.

“I got word back: ‘Alan, you are testing higher than Will Smith.’ And then I was gone,” Tudyk recalled. This led to his complete omission from publicity materials, leaving many fans unaware of his involvement in the film even today.

The actor expressed his initial shock and disappointment, noting the effort he put into the role. Portraying Sonny required Tudyk to master robotic movements through motion capture, a technology that was cutting-edge at the time but not as ubiquitous as it is now.

“I was like, ‘Wait, nobody is going to know I’m in it!’ I put a lot into that performance. I had to move like a robot. At the time, I was very upset,” he said. This anecdote demonstrates the challenges of motion capture acting, where performers like Tudyk often deliver nuanced performances without the on-screen recognition they deserve.

Directed by Alex Proyas, I, Robot is loosely based on Isaac Asimov’s short stories and follows Smith’s character, Detective Del Spooner, as he uncovers a potential robot uprising in a futuristic Chicago.

Tudyk’s Sonny is central to the plot, a unique robot suspected of a grizzly crime despite the laws governing artificial intelligence. The film also features strong supporting turns from Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, James Cromwell, and Chi McBride. Upon release, it grossed over $347 million worldwide, cementing Smith’s status as a box office draw in the action genre.

What makes Tudyk’s story particularly juicy is the implication of star power dynamics.

Will Smith, fresh off hits like Men in Black and Bad Boys, was the undeniable face of the movie. Dropping Tudyk from marketing could be seen as a move to protect the lead’s prominence, perhaps fueled by ego or studio caution. While Tudyk didn’t directly accuse Smith, the timing aligns with reports of Smith’s influential role in his projects.

Representatives for Smith have been contacted for comment, but as of now, there’s no official response, leaving room for speculation about whether this was a bruised ego at play or just business as usual in Tinseltown.

Motion capture has evolved significantly since I, Robot, with pioneers like Andy Serkis (Gollum in The Lord of the Rings) and Ahmed Best (Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars) paving the way. Tudyk himself revisited the tech for his beloved droid K-2SO in Rogue One and its spin-off series Andor. His career trajectory shows resilience; from voicing characters in Wreck-It Ralph and Moana to live-action roles in Firefly and Resident Alien, Tudyk has built a legacy of memorable performances.

This behind the scenes gossip serves as a reminder of Hollywood’s competitive underbelly, where even standout work can be overshadowed by marketing strategies. For fans of I, Robot, it might prompt a rewatch to appreciate the contributions of Alan Tudyk anew.

As for Will Smith, his career has far bigger storms to contend with, including the infamous Oscars slap in 2022.  He’s currently trying to claw his way back into Hollywood’s good graces but his recent rap song, titled “I Like Pretty Girls” was widely ridiculed online.
