James Gunn is apparently going to continue marketing himself as the face of the DC universe if the Peacemaker Season 2 press tour is any indicator.

When Superman launched its marketing campaign, many fans were surprised to find the spotlight wasn’t on the Man of Steel. It wasn’t on David Corenswet, the new Superman, or Rachel Brosnahan, the new Lois Lane. The spotlight was on James Gunn. He was the one rolling out trailers, giving interviews, and explaining the movie’s vision as if the film was his personal autobiography. Even if the actors themselves were being interviewed it was more often than not right alongside Gunn.

At the time, some shrugged. Maybe it was a one-off. Gunn was introducing his new era of DC, so perhaps it made sense for him to be front and center. But now, with Peacemaker Season 2 gearing up, the pattern is crystal clear: the DCU isn’t just about superheroes anymore—it’s about James Gunn starring as James Gunn.

Gunn’s DCU, Gunn’s Rules

Every trailer? Introduced by Gunn. Every press cycle? Led by Gunn. Every interview? Centered on Gunn. It’s not just a marketing strategy—it’s a brand exercise where he makes himself the product in a way Kevin Feige (for all his many…MANY faults) has never done at Marvel. It’s something I’ve never seen a director, writer, producer, or studio head do in the comic book genre period.

Not even Joss Whedon or Jon Favreau, arguably far bigger names in the film world ever went as far as James Gunn in promoting themselves along with their movies.

And conveniently, the next major project rolling out under this new regime is Peacemaker—a show starring his wife, his friends, and his loyal collaborators.

The optics are terrible. Gunn wiped the slate clean when it came to icons like Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Ben Affleck. But when it came to his circle? Not a single recast. They survived the “reboot” unscathed, carried forward into the shiny new DCU while bigger stars were shown the door. They also got to produce a show with all the swearing and adult humor they wanted, regardless of the movie being attached in canon to Superman, a very family friendly movie.

The Ego Problem

This begs the question: is James Gunn capable of letting his actors shine, or will he always be the one hogging the spotlight? Can Corenswet ever truly sell himself as Superman when Gunn won’t stop inserting himself as the face of the brand? Can John Cena own the Peacemaker hype when his showrunner insists on being the hype machine?

Hollywood has seen egos before, but rarely this open. Kevin Feige at Marvel was always the architect (in reputation if not reality), never the star. Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm spoke occasionally, but always let her actors carry the films (for better or worse…). James Gunn, however, seems determined to be the marketing headline for DC.

It’s unknown yet whether Gunn will position himself as the face of the brand when Supergirl comes out in 2026. That’s a project Gunn did not write or direct, so it will be interesting to see if his mugging for the camera endures.

The Risk for DC

Fans don’t buy tickets to see James Gunn. They buy tickets to see Superman fly, Batman brood, or Wonder Woman fight. They subscribe to HBO Max for John Cena in a silver helmet, not for Gunn explaining, yet again, how much he “loves these characters.”

By making himself the face of the DCU, Gunn risks alienating the very audience he needs. The more he dominates the conversation, the less room there is for the heroes to breathe. And if this continues, the DCU won’t feel like a shared universe of legendary icons—it’ll feel like one man’s personal playground, where his friends get starring roles and his voice drowns out everyone else’s.

The Bottom Line

James Gunn is talented, no doubt. But a universe built around one man’s ego isn’t much of a universe at all. If he wants the DCU to succeed, he has to step back and let the stars take the stage. Otherwise, fans may start wondering if they’re tuning in for Superman and Peacemaker—or just another episode of The James Gunn Show.
