The Wizarding World continues to expand across multiple mediums, but with each new project comes the shadow of controversy surrounding franchise creator J.K. Rowling. At the center of recent discussion is Michelle Gomez, the acclaimed Scottish actor known for Doctor Who as Missy, who will voice Professor McGonagall in Audible and Pottermore Publishing’s Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.

Michelle Gomez Responds After Backlash

Upon the announcement of her casting, Gomez faced scrutiny from fans concerned about participating in a Rowling-linked project. She addressed the backlash directly in an Instagram Story aimed at fans.

“I want to speak directly to the concerns that have been raised about my involvement in this project,” she said. “I hear you, and I understand why this is painful for many.” She went on to claim that she stands with those who identify with genders that differ from their birth and supports their rights “fully and without hesitation.”

Gomez further explained that while she accepted the role out of love for the stories and their meaning to readers, she now understands “how deeply complicated and hurtful this association can feel.” She closed by stressing so-called accountability and allyship, a familiar refrain from actors eager to appease activists.

“Being an ally means listening even when it’s uncomfortable and taking accountability where it’s needed,” she said. “I’m committed to doing both.”

Gomez’s statement is a clear rebuke of Rowling, who has consistently defended women’s rights and safe spaces. While Gomez sides with activist criticism, Rowling has never wavered on her stance on keeping biological men out of women’s spaces.

Despite her sudden statement, Gomez has expressed no immediate plans to donate her salary from this project to gender charities.

A Star-Studded Audiobook Cast

The audiobooks feature over 200 performers across all seven novels. Alongside Gomez, the cast includes Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, and Cush Jumbo as the narrator.

Two sets of young actors will voice Harry, Ron, and Hermione at different stages of the series, allowing the books to be experienced fully from childhood to adulthood. The first release, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, arrives November 4th, with subsequent books following monthly.

HBO’s TV Reboot: A Separate Casting Landscape

Meanwhile, HBO is developing a live-action Harry Potter series with a completely separate cast. Nick Frost has been cast as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Professor Snape. These actors are navigating the public scrutiny surrounding Rowling’s gender views in their own ways—some distancing themselves, others issuing statements or emphasizing professional boundaries.

HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys has stated in interviews with The Independent that Rowling’s personal views have not influenced casting or production decisions, emphasizing that the priority remains “what’s on screen.” Nevertheless, each casting announcement reignites discussion about the franchise’s complicated relationship with its creator’s politics.

Centering the Conversation on Michelle Gomez

Gomez’s statement may have been framed as an act of allyship, but in practice it comes across as an apology tour for taking a lucrative role in a Rowling-connected project while keeping the paycheck. She openly acknowledges the “pain” fans claim to feel, yet makes no move to distance herself financially from the work or donate to the causes she champions in words.

In the end, her remarks serve more as damage control than genuine sacrifice, leaving many to question whether this was about principles—or simply protecting her own reputation while enjoying the benefits of the job.

“Hi!
To all the ze, zems, xirs, dragonkin, wolfkin, and all the others in the ‘Spectrum’, it is so nice to meet you! Just so you know, because I am an Ally you see, when I wake up in the morning I sometimes choose to be an Attention Whore and other days a Nanny State Virtue Signaling SJW.

But since I am an Ally, I can identify as one, the other, or both on any particular day depending on if one or the other to avoid any hurt fee-fees and mental anguish. Because I am an Ally and I HEAR YOU.

I am so lucky to make a lot of money because that gives me the privilege of forging the world working joe’s have to live in without participating in the results. I don’t care the Joes have to deal with the world that I and all the other ‘Allies’ encourage to grow because we are Allies. And rich. We will never suffer the consequences of our actions. At least not in my lifetime so let them eat cake!”

In Allyship,
(Did I mentioned I was an Ally?) Michelle.”
