Weapons is the number-one movie in the world right now, and it may not be the last time audiences step into its unsettling universe. Director Zach Cregger has revealed that he already has another idea set within the same world, hinting that a Weapons sequel could one day make its way to the big screen.
For horror fans, that tease is more than enough to start speculating on what direction the story could take.
Cregger’s Sequel Tease
Speaking with Variety, Cregger was asked directly if he could see himself returning to the world of Weapons. His answer left little doubt:
“Definitely. I’ve actually … it’s funny you asked that. I can’t help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I’m kind of excited about. I’m not going to do it next, and I probably won’t do it after my next movie, but I do have one and I’d like to see it on the screen one day.”
That “next movie” is none other than a Resident Evil project, which Cregger confirmed will be his next directing job. He told Variety that his vision for the film is to capture the unique pacing and atmosphere of the games:
“The pacing of those games is so unique and effective, and just being locked in with one character moving from point A to point B, knowing you’re going to pass through this gauntlet of terror, and you’ve got to be methodical and thoughtful about it. That’s cool. That’s cinematic. So I want to tell the story in the world of the games that honors the lore of the games, but it’s a new story.”
With his focus now on Resident Evil, fans may be in for a wait before Cregger revisits the world of Weapons. Still, the fact that he’s already brainstorming a Weapons sequel suggests he sees a future in the universe he’s created. Considering the way Weapons left audiences talking, it’s easy to imagine how another chapter could further expand the story.
Box Office Success Strengthens Sequel Chances
If the numbers are any indication, Warner Bros. and New Line will be eager for more. Weapons opened to a massive $43.5 million, making it the best August debut ever for a horror film. The film also scored the highest Monday performance for an August horror release with $5.2 million, beating records previously held by The Sixth Sense and Annabelle: Creation. That kind of momentum is rare, especially for original horror films in today’s market.

As of August 11, 2025, the film has earned $81.2 million worldwide on a $38 million budget. With a breakeven point of $95 million, it’s on track to cross profitability in its second week. Industry projections expect at least a $21 million second weekend, though strong word-of-mouth could push it higher. Compared with other horror breakouts like Get Out or Five Nights at Freddy’s, Weapons is already beating their weekday holds. These kinds of results are exactly what studios look for when deciding whether to build out a franchise.
A Universe in the Making?
While Cregger’s attention is currently locked on Resident Evil, the door to Weapons is far from closed. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Warner Bros. and New Line have been discussing potential spinoffs, including a prequel centered on the character Gladys. However, sources stress that no deals have been made, and for now, Cregger’s own vision for a Weapons sequel remains the strongest clue about where the story could go.
Given the way horror franchises often grow out of unexpected success stories, it wouldn’t be surprising if Weapons follows the same path. Cregger may be taking a step away before returning, but the film’s financial strength and audience enthusiasm make a Weapons sequel seem less like a possibility and more like an eventuality. Fans may have to wait a few years, but the seeds have already been planted for Weapons to become the next big horror series.
