Disney has announced a major update to one of its most historic attractions — Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom with the controversial Walt Disney animatronic that has been making headlines in California.

The company confirmed that a new Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney will soon appear in the attraction’s opening scene. The decision comes nearly a month and a half after Disneyland unveiled the same animatronic in Walt Disney – A Magical Life, where its rollout and reception has been anything but smooth.

Disneyland’s Rocky Experiment

On July 17th, Disneyland debuted its new show Walt Disney – A Magical Life, featuring the first-ever animatronic likeness of Walt Disney. What was supposed to be a heartfelt tribute quickly became one of the most polarizing additions in years. While Imagineers touted it as their most advanced figure yet, the rollout was plagued by embarrassing malfunctions and criticisms that the figure looks nothing like Walt Disney. Videos circulated of the animatronic freezing mid-performance, curtains closing to cover the error, and guests leaving visibly frustrated.

Even more damaging were the words of Walt’s own family. Joanna Miller, Walt’s granddaughter, blasted the creation as “dehumanizing,” saying she cried upon seeing it. She emphasized that her grandfather never wanted to be remembered as a robot and accused Disney of reducing him to something cold and artificial.

“It’s not him,” she said flatly in interviews. Other family members disagreed, but Miller’s criticism cast a long shadow over the project.

Fans, too, were split. Some praised the technology, while others questioned whether Disney should have waited until the figure looked and moved more convincingly. The result was an attraction drawing little in the way of crowds, with many choosing to skip it altogether after the initial hype fizzled.

Carousel of Progress: A New Test Case

Now the company is preparing to transplant that same animatronic figure into Carousel of Progress at Walt Disney World. According to Disney’s official announcement at Destination D23 on August 30th, the animatronic will be featured in the attraction’s opening scene. While the company says it’s a way to “share Walt’s vision with a new generation,” longtime fans are wondering whether this addition could disrupt the charm of one of Walt’s final personal projects.

The Carousel, famous for following a single family through decades of technological change, has remained largely untouched for years. The addition of Walt himself could easily work in the opening curtain scene, where the attraction traditionally introduces its theme and pays homage to Walt’s vision. But fans are already concerned that it might come at the expense of the classic family sequences that make the ride so beloved.

Those fears will likely continue until Disney provides more details. But if it is the curtain scene, it will effectively remove the narrated line about how Walt Disney was “as proudly American as anyone could possibly be.”

A Risky Tribute

There’s little doubt that Disney wants to strengthen the Carousel’s connection to its founder. The attraction is already one of the last remaining links to Walt’s direct creative hand, and putting his animatronic likeness on stage seems like a natural extension on paper. But if Disneyland’s struggles are any indicator, this move comes with significant risks.

If the figure malfunctions in Florida the way it did in California, guests could sour on the attraction quickly. And if Joanna Miller’s warnings prove prophetic, the figure could be remembered more as a misstep than a milestone. At best, it will be seen as an awkward overlay on a ride that has charmed generations without needing a literal Walt Disney presence.

Preserving the Family

The biggest question remains whether Disney will keep the heart of the Carousel intact. Fans hope that this new addition will serve as a curtain-raiser, leaving the family scenes untouched. The generational storytelling has always been the soul of the attraction, and replacing any of it with an animatronic Walt would be viewed as stripping away its core identity.

Disney insists this is about honoring the man behind the magic. But if history repeats itself from Disneyland, fans may find themselves questioning whether Walt would have wanted this at all.

Final Thought

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has survived the decades because it balances nostalgia, charm, and genuine innovation. If this new animatronic can complement that legacy without overwhelming it, Disney might pull off a respectful tribute.

But if it inherits the same baggage from Disneyland — technical glitches, lukewarm crowds, and family disapproval — then the Carousel could become the next flashpoint in a growing debate about how the company chooses to honor its founder.
