James Gunn seemingly can’t help himself. The man who was hired to “save” DC has instead made himself its unofficial mascot — and not in a good way. Every announcement, every casting, every costume reveal, every social media fight… there he is. Gunn has wedged himself into every facet of the DCU, and audiences are starting to notice.
Modern DC media feels less like a love letter to classic DC Comics and more like a love letter to James Gunn, written by James Gunn, a James Gunn production.

Gunn Everywhere, All the Time
Since officially taking the reins of DC, Gunn has been the loudest voice in the room. And while a studio head should naturally guide the overall vision, Gunn has turned the DCU into a one-man band.

He’s not just writing and directing Superman and Peacemaker. He’s also giving his personal commentary on Batman casting, chiming in on costume designs, and even hyping up video game releases. Three projects into the DCU’s relaunch, and fans are already asking: Does every single property need James Gunn’s fingerprints on it?
Compare that to Kevin Feige. For years, Feige has been the not always steady hand behind the MCU. But for all his many (many…) faults, Feige rarely gives himself credit in public. He doesn’t hijack interviews meant for directors. He doesn’t make himself the face of the entire brand. You might have disagreed with his choices (I certainly do…), but the Marvel universe was always about the heroes, not about Feige’s ego.
With Gunn, it’s the opposite. He can’t stop putting himself front and center.
“The Best Casting I’ve Ever Done”
The clearest example of Gunn’s self-promotion came with his comments about Milly Alcock’s Supergirl casting. Gunn gushed on the Howard Stern Show before the former King of All Media’s shrinking audience: “Milly Alcock… might be the best bit of casting I’ve ever done in my entire life.”
The arrogance of that statement is staggering. Gunn isn’t directing the Supergirl film. He isn’t writing it. And yet here he is, framing Alcock’s casting as his achievement — not the creative team’s. In Gunn’s telling, the movie’s success won’t belong to its director or its star. It will belong to James Gunn.

This is the kind of overreach that poisons a cinematic universe. Imagine if Feige had stepped on Ryan Coogler’s toes during Black Panther’s casting. Or if he’d taken personal credit for Guardians of the Galaxy. Or imagine Walter Hamada, who ran WB films suring the Snyderverse taking credit for the casting of Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.
Directors would have walked. Fans would have revolted. Yet with Gunn, this kind of self-aggrandizement is becoming the norm.
Hostility to the Fans
Gunn’s constant presence might be forgivable if he at least treated fans with respect. Instead, his online persona is notoriously combative. He doesn’t just engage with criticism — he escalates it. He argues with fans. He belittles them. He doubles down when people push back and comments on every tiny rumor about his upcoming slate of movies.

James Gunn acknowledges his scripts are inspired by real life events and/or patterns.
That behavior might be fine for a small-time filmmaker trying to defend his indie project. But for the head of DC? It’s absurd. Fans don’t want to feel like they’re in a running feud with the guy in charge of their favorite heroes. They want to feel like their passion is respected, even when they’re critical.
Gunn’s approach alienates the very people he should be winning over. And it reinforces the idea that the DCU isn’t about the characters or the legacy — it’s about James Gunn’s ego.
Superman Should Be Superman
It would be one thing if Gunn confined his spotlight-hogging to projects he actually directs. Superman and Peacemaker? Fair game. Promote them all you want. That’s his work.

But Batman? Supergirl? Video games? Those aren’t his projects. Yet he can’t seem to resist inserting himself. At this rate, is Gunn going to pop up in press tours for Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, or Aquaman spinoffs too?
Superman should be the face of Superman. Batman should be the face of any Batman film. Supergirl should be the face of Supergirl. The head of DC Studios should not be elbowing his way into every conversation.
A Universe Hijacked
The tragedy here is that DC deserves better. This is a brand with nearly a century of history. Fans don’t want to see it warped into the “Gunn Cinematic Universe.” They want it to feel like DC — the characters they grew up with, the mythologies that shaped them, the stories that mattered.

Instead, the more Gunn talks, the more it becomes clear that this isn’t about building a shared universe. It’s about building his personal empire. The press cycle for every project is now just another opportunity for James Gunn to pat himself on the back.
At some point, that showboating starts to drown out the heroes themselves. And that point was months ago…
Time to Step Back
DC has a deep bench of talent, from actors to directors to writers. They don’t need James Gunn popping up to claim credit or to pick fights with fans online. They need space to tell their stories. They need the spotlight on them, not on him.
If Gunn really cares about DC, he’ll do something radical: he’ll shut up.

He’ll let Superman, Batman, and the rest of the pantheon stand on their own. He’ll let the films, the characters, and the performances speak louder than his Threads account (seriously, who uses Threads!?).
Because right now, it doesn’t feel like DC is about its heroes. It feels like it’s about James Gunn. And that’s the biggest mistake of all.

Remind everyone he advocates racial violence against Whites and thinks child sexual abuse is a perfectly good subject to make jokes about. I can guarantee you he has opinions and beliefs so far left he’d make all the members of The Squad blush. The sooner he goes the way of Snyder and Whedon and is forced into the unemployment line permanently, the better.
