A New Claim On Cracker Barrel Rebrand Backfire: Were Social Media Bots Really Behind the Backlash?

In recent reports highlighted by the Wall Street Journal and Restaurant Business, researchers claim to have found that "social media bots" or fake social media accounts were responsible for the backlash against the Cracker Barrel rebrand.

The firm PeakMetrics reported that nearly half of boycott-related posts were likely from bots or automated accounts. On the other hand, a second social analytics firm, Cyabra, estimated that only 21% of the profiles participating in the logo debate were fake. These supposed Cracker Barrel bots circulated hashtags like #BoycottCrackerBarrel and #CrackerBarrelHasFallen, often repeating identical phrases and targeting CEO Julie Felss Masino directly.
