Ghost of Yotei sales rumors have gained traction despite no official confirmation from Sony or Sucker Punch.
In the days since Ghost of Yotei’s launch, gaming headlines have been buzzing with claims that the title sold 1.3 million copies in its first 24 hours. The problem? That number appears to come from a single unverified tweet.

An X post claiming Ghost of Yotei sold 1.3 million copies in a single day – X, @millieamand
On October 3, 2025, an X user going by Millie A (@millieamand) posted: “Hearing, 1.3 million sold on first day for Yōtei. Ever so slightly ahead of Tsushima’s first 24 hours of 1.25 million. Tsushima kept pace on its second day with another 1.15 million sold. Can Yōtei keep up?”
The account has roughly 9,100 followers and has shared supposed industry insights before, but no verifiable sourcing was provided for the sales figure. Despite that, multiple outlets including Tech4Gamers, GameRant, and Gamereactor ran with the number as fact, citing “insider reports,” “reports,” or “industry sources.”

Nowhere in those articles does anyone reference Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sucker Punch Productions, or any financial disclosure—the only known source is that one tweet.
Why Ghost of Yotei Sales Are So Contentious
The debate over Ghost of Yotei sales isn’t just about numbers — it’s about reputation. In the months leading up to release, Sucker Punch Productions found itself at the center of a public-relations storm that alienated a large portion of its own fan base.

Sucker Punch Senior Dev Drew Harrison mocks Charlie Kirk on BlueSky – BlueSky
Former developer Drew Harrison posted inflammatory remarks online appearing to mock the assassination of Charlie Kirk, which immediately sparked outrage across social media. After days of mounting pressure, Sucker Punch confirmed that Harrison was no longer employed by the studio.
Adding to the controversy, lead actress Erika Ishii, who provides both the voice and facial capture for the game’s protagonist, has long been an outspoken political activist. Ishii has publicly identified with ANTIFA movements and frequently uses her platforms to promote gender activism and anti-police rhetoric.

Her positions, while personal, have made her a lightning rod for criticism from players who feel the studio has blurred the line between entertainment and ideology.

Together, these factors have turned Ghost of Yotei into a flashpoint — not just for gamers debating artistic merit, but for audiences questioning whether politics and personal conduct have undermined what could have been Sony’s most important exclusive of the year.
A Familiar Pattern: Rumor Becomes “Fact” Overnight
This isn’t the first time the gaming press has amplified an unsourced figure. But the speed with which Ghost of Yotei sales became “confirmed” across headlines is remarkable. Within hours, dozens of sites repeated the same claim almost word-for-word, complete with the same 1.3 million number.

For comparison, Ghost of Tsushima’s original launch figures were confirmed directly by Sony soon after release.
- 2.4 million in three days – official PlayStation press release, July 2020
- 5 million by November 2020 – Sucker Punch’s verified X post
- 8 million by January 2022 – Sony confirmation at CES
Those were verifiable. These are not.
And yet, this new figure has spread just as widely — without a shred of official data to back it up.
Silence from Sucker Punch Raises Eyebrows
Normally, a Sony studio would seize the chance to brag about breaking a million units in a day. Especially considering the controversy leading up to launch.

If Ghost of Yotei really had a record-breaking launch, it would have been a perfect opportunity for Sucker Punch to push back against critics and claim victory. Instead, the studio has been completely silent since release. No “thank you” post, no sales milestone banner, and no mention from Sony’s official PlayStation accounts.
That silence stands in stark contrast to how Sony handled Tsushima — and it’s fueling speculation that the sequel may not be performing as well as the rumor suggests.
Until Sony Speaks, the Numbers Don’t Count
At this point, every mention of Ghost of Yotei sales numbers traces back to one unverified social media post. No investor filing, no analyst report, no confirmation from Sony or Sucker Punch.
That doesn’t mean the game flopped — it could still be selling steadily — but it does mean the 1.3 million figure is unsubstantiated.

In other words, the only thing proven so far is that the gaming press still struggles to distinguish between “hearing” and “confirmed.”
