According to a rumor from Nexus Point, Danielle Deadwyler is supposedly in talks with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler regarding a potential role in his upcoming The X-Files reboot. Staying true to the original format, the new series will feature two main investigators, one male and one female, with Deadwyler portraying the latter.

Deadwyler’s roles in Till The Piano Lesson led to her nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. It’s unclear whether Deadwyler would be taking on the role of Agent Scully, first brought to life by Gillian Anderson, or whether she’d be playing a new original character. If she is playing Scully, this would be a race-swap for the X-Files reboot.

Ryan Coogler is best known for his work directing both Black Panther films, as well as the more recent Sinners.

Legacy of The X-Files

Originally created by Chris Carter, the sci-fi drama series aired exclusively on Fox from 1993 to 2002 for nine seasons. Along with the series came two movies, The X-Files: Fight the Future, and, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, which were released in 1998 and 2008 respectively.

The show would later be revived for two more seasons between 2016 and 2018.

Gillian Anderson, former lead from The X-Files has allegedly met with the director in order to discuss the upcoming series.

Exuberant Exultation from The X-Files Alumni

Gillian Anderson, appearing on the Today Show in 2024, personally endorsed the project, and stated that she couldn’t imagine a better way to reboot the franchise.

“Now, Ryan Coogler, who is the director of Black Panther — brilliant, brilliant director — has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen.”

Then, earlier this year, Ryan Coogler appeared for an interview with Last Podcast On The Left, wherein the director discussed his upcoming X-Files reboot.

“I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f—ing scary,” said the 39 year old director, “We’re going to try to make something really great, bro, something for the real X Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.”

Despite this excitement, however, online discourse around the project has grown beyond mere sunshine and rainbows.

Worries from the World Wide Web

Some individuals have raised concerns regarding director Ryan Coogler’s leadership over the project. The director is responsible for both Black Panther films, and criticisms of these movies are quite popular online.

MauLer’s “Black Panther: An Unbridled Rage” and The Critical Drinker’s “Black Panther Is Overrated” are two famous examples of this, and have individually garnered over 2 million views.

These reviewers highlighted numerous perceived flaws within the critically acclaimed film. Their critiques focused on: poor writing, lackluster character progression, inconsistent use of technology and magic, and, perhaps most importantly, confusing character motivations.

These are obviously critical details for any story, but especially so for a character-focused science fiction. Any failures on these fronts will be easily noticeable in the wake of the original series, which has been praised specifically for its character progression.

Given the current lack of details regarding such matters, however, it seems the critics will just have to wait and see.

The X-Files reboot is currently in production and does not yet have a release date.
