Viewers (what few remain…) expecting a fresh episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday night were caught off guard when ABC unexpectedly aired a rerun instead. The scheduled broadcast—featuring actor David Duchovny, Stranger Things star Joe Keery, and singer Madison Beer—was pulled at the last minute without any public explanation.

Beer later confirmed the cancellation on Instagram, posting around 7 p.m. ET.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, @jimmykimmellive needed to reschedule my performance that was originally scheduled to air tonight to a later date,” she said.

ABC did not issue a statement on the canceled Jimmy Kimmel episode, and the show’s official social media channels made no mention of the change. Audience members, however, reported receiving an email from Kimmel’s production team stating simply: “Tonight’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live has been postponed. Apologies for any inconvenience. We will contact you to reschedule for a future taping.”

The unscheduled rerun—an older episode from October 28th—immediately fueled online speculation. Entertainment outlet LateNighter cited a “personal matter” as the reason for the delay, though it provided no further detail. Neither Duchovny nor Keery commented publicly on the cancellation.

Timing Raises Eyebrows

The timing of this sudden disruption has not gone unnoticed. It comes less than two months after Kimmel was suspended for several days following remarks he made about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. During a September 15th monologue, Kimmel suggested the alleged killer was aligned with the “MAGA gang,” a statement he later described as “ill-timed or unclear” (but never fully apologized for).

Disney, which owns ABC, temporarily pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! from its schedule in the aftermath, citing a desire to “avoid further inflaming a tense situation.” Some ABC affiliates even refused to air the program upon its return. Kimmel’s reinstatement reportedly came after direct talks with Disney CEO Bob Iger and Entertainment co-chair Dana Walden.

Since then, the late-night host’s viewership and advertising numbers have reportedly struggled to rebound, to put it nicely. To be more blunt, his ratings have been in a freefall following an initial surge upon his return. While there’s no evidence linking Thursday’s canceled Jimmy Kimmel episode to any controversy, the lack of communication from ABC has kept speculation swirling.

Disney’s Late-Night Dilemma

Kimmel’s show, once a steady ratings performer for ABC, has faced mounting competition and declining relevance amid shifting audience habits and online backlash. Thursday’s abrupt cancellation illustrates a broader challenge for Disney’s entertainment arm, which continues to face fallout from controversies surrounding its high-profile talent.

For now, the network has not announced when new episodes will resume or why the sudden change occurred. Fans hoping for answers will just have to wait and check social media, since it’s obvious they’re not actually tuning in for the show.
