Casting speculation around James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow continues to intensify, and a new name has now entered the conversation. According to a fresh industry rumor, Dave Bautista is being discussed as a potential choice to portray Brainiac, adding another wrinkle to the evolving picture of Superman’s next big-screen outing.
While nothing has been confirmed, this Bautista Brainiac chatter illustrates just how fluid the project remains as DC Studios inches toward production.

The report comes via industry insider Jeff Sneider. As with all early casting talk, this information remains unverified and should be treated as speculation rather than confirmation.
Brainiac is Confirmed — Bautista is Not
What has been confirmed is Brainiac’s role in Man of Tomorrow. James Gunn has already revealed that the iconic Superman villain will serve as the film’s primary antagonist. That confirmation alone has fueled months of casting rumors, with multiple actors previously linked to the role in various reports.

Dave Bautista now joins a growing list of names that have circulated in connection with Brainiac, including Matt Smith, Claes Bang, and Sam Rockwell. None of those discussions have resulted in an official announcement, and DC Studios has not commented publicly on any casting deliberations.
According to Sneider, Bautista’s name has come up in discussions and he is being viewed as a frontrunner. However, no deal is in place and nothing has been finalized.
Why Bautista Is Generating Buzz
Bautista’s involvement — even at the rumor stage — has prompted debate among fans, largely because Brainiac is not traditionally portrayed as a physical bruiser (with a few notable exceptions). The character is defined by cold intelligence, emotional detachment, and an overwhelming sense of menace rooted in control rather than brute force.

That said, Bautista’s recent career trajectory has moved well beyond purely muscle-driven roles. While he rose to mainstream fame playing Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has since pursued more restrained, character-focused performances that emphasize presence and intensity over spectacle. A more imposing, calculating version of Brainiac could theoretically align with that evolution, depending on how Gunn chooses to interpret the character.
Still, this remains an editorial assessment rather than a reflection of any confirmed creative direction.
Bautista’s Longstanding Interest in DC
This isn’t the first time Bautista’s name has been associated with DC. In the past, the actor openly discussed his interest in playing Bane, before later stating that he felt he had aged out of the role and no longer viewed himself as the right fit. Despite that, Bautista has continued to express interest in taking on a DC character and has spoken positively about working with James Gunn again.

The existing relationship between Bautista and Gunn is notable. Gunn directed Bautista across multiple Guardians of the Galaxy films, and their professional collaboration is well established. With Gunn now serving as co-head of DC Studios while also writing and directing Man of Tomorrow, it’s unsurprising that familiar names from his past projects are being discussed — even if those discussions ultimately go nowhere.
Where Man of Tomorrow Stands Now
Man of Tomorrow is currently scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. James Gunn is set to write and direct the film, which stars David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. According to previously released information, Superman and Lex Luthor will find themselves forced into an uneasy alliance to confront a larger threat — Brainiac.

Beyond that framework, DC Studios has remained tight-lipped. No casting announcements have been made regarding Brainiac, and no official confirmations have been issued in response to the latest rumor.
For now, the Bautista Brainiac discussion serves as another reminder that DC’s rebooted cinematic universe is still very much in flux. Until DC Studios makes a formal announcement, all casting chatter should be treated accordingly.
