Nintendo Expands the Mario Movie Universe
The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy film represents the next major chapter in Nintendo’s expanding cinematic universe following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Released in 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became one of the biggest animated films of all time, earning over $1.3 billion at the global box office. The film introduced audiences to an animated Mushroom Kingdom and featured iconic characters including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, and Toad.

The success of that film prompted Nintendo and Illumination to rapidly expand the franchise’s film ambitions.
Rather than simply retreading familiar ground from the classic platforming games, the new movie is expected to draw inspiration from Nintendo’s beloved Super Mario Galaxy titles on the Nintendo Wii. Those games are widely regarded as some of the most ambitious entries in the franchise, introducing cosmic settings, gravity-bending level design, and new characters such as Rosalina and the Lumas.
A film adaptation of that storyline opens the door to a far more expansive adventure than the Mushroom Kingdom alone.
What Fans Expect From the Galaxy Storyline
While Nintendo has remained tight-lipped about specific plot details, the Super Mario Galaxy games center on Mario traveling across planets to stop Bowser after he attempts to conquer the universe using cosmic power.
The story also introduces Rosalina, a mysterious guardian of the cosmos who oversees the Comet Observatory and protects the Lumas—small star-like creatures that power the galaxy.

Rosalina is set to play a major role in the new film where she’ll be played by Brie Larsen.
The shift to a cosmic setting could also dramatically expand the visual scope of the franchise on the big screen, moving beyond castles and pipes into planetary worlds, star systems, and gravity-defying environments.
A Direct Focused Entirely on the Film
Nintendo Direct presentations are typically used to reveal upcoming games or major updates to Nintendo hardware and software. However, the company has increasingly used the format to promote major entertainment projects tied to its gaming franchises.
The upcoming Mario Galaxy Nintendo Direct appears to be one of those cases, functioning more as a promotional showcase for the film than a traditional gaming broadcast.

Nintendo made a point of clarifying that viewers should not expect game announcements during the presentation—something that sparked mixed reactions among fans hoping for new titles.
Still, with the final trailer set to debut during the stream, the event will likely offer the most detailed look yet at the film’s story, setting, and characters.
For fans eager to see how Nintendo plans to bring the galaxy-spanning adventure to theaters, Monday’s presentation could provide the biggest glimpse yet into the next evolution of the Mario movie franchise.
