Just when you thought it was safe to go to a convention or gathering without a constant reminder of the pandemic, vaccines, or other medical crisis and controversies… Star Wars Celebration would like to have a word with you.

Posted by Star Wars Rebel Art Empire and liked by Phil Szostak, Lucasfilm Creative Art Manager, SWRAE is apparently distributing button pins for people to declare their vaccination status at Star Wars Celebration. Though not officially endorsed by Disney or Lucasfilm, don’t be surprised if these things are everywhere. That tends to be how things go when you can feel better about yourself for free.

Star Wars Celebration will be taking place May 26th – 29th, strategically placed to generate as much Star Wars excitement as possible for the new Obi-Wan Kenobi live action series on Disney+. As has been discussed on That Park Place, there is far more than just Star Wars riding on the Kenobi series:

If the character of Kenobi, combined with bringing back legacy talent, can’t generate more enthusiasm, this may truly be the nail in the coffin for the modern Disney Star Wars movement. While it stands to reason that surely Kenobi can reach a billion minutes in viewership for its double debut episodes, if it can’t reach 1.4 billion you could really say that Star Wars is mortally wounded. Why do I say the 1.4 billion number as a litmus test? Because over the past year, Kenobi has tracked at double the interest that Boba Fett was pulling with teaser-to-teaser and reveal-to-reveal measurements.

While Disney needs people to be on board with Star Wars from all walks of life and from all beliefs, it seems Lucasfilm may just trip them up regardless. Though some may view public declarations of vaccination status for diseases to be a positive thing, others are likely to see it as a virtue signal or an attempt to gain clout for a medical decision. That Lucasfilm employees are liking this sort of thing is just another indication that Disney hasn’t gotten control of some of the problems with Star Wars. It’s not vaccines, medical policy or fan initiatives that are the problem… it’s that at every step of the way it seems Star Wars is constantly being tied to some sort of modern cultural feud. If this is any indication, Star Wars Celebration won’t be exempt.

If you want to wear buttons like this to Star Wars Celebration, great. If you don’t want to wear buttons like this to Star Wars Celebration, also great. I just think it would be nice to have one Star Wars event that was completely free of all the reminders about the modern world and the divisions in it. I guess I’ll keep waiting…
