In a recent post on X, Marvel actor Vincent D’Onofrio warned that he would leave the platform if “the negativity continues.” The often outspoken Kingpin actor emphasized his desire to keep his online interactions positive, noting that personal life can already be challenging.

Some observers have pointed out the irony of his request. D’Onofrio has a long history of making controversial statements that spark backlash, and he has previously deactivated both his X and Instagram accounts—only to return later.

D’Onofrio Issues Warning to Followers

“I will however stop communicating on my X account if the negativity continues,” D’Onofrio wrote in a Tuesday post. “I believe most of you will understand that why should we deal with negative comments or badgering of any kind in life if we can just turn it off. Especially when our own lives can be hard enough sometimes. Wouldn’t you all agree?” He concluded, “So let’s keep the fun rolling and in a positive way shall we.”

It’s unclear what the “however” statement was in response to. The actor had not posted anything since Sunday, when he wished his followers a happy Easter—albeit somewhat irreverently.

Some believe he may have been responding to ongoing fan discussions around the release of the second season of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. Conversation surrounding the show before its release suggested the superhero series would be overtly political—and polarizing.

Speaking to the press at the red carpet premier, D’Onofrio said, “Being a New Yorker, what we are doing in the second season would truly be frightening for a New Yorker.” He added, “There are aspects of what we do now in the second season that are scary to think about if they were real.”

D’Onofrio isn’t just the star of a show that draws from current-day events—he has also made his political leanings known. The accessibility social media gives audiences to celebrities means that being online often comes with exposure to some negativity.

Ultimately, the only way to avoid backlash is not to engage at all—a strategy D’Onofrio has employed in the past.

A Pattern of Stepping Away

In 2019, both D’Onofrio and his wife faced online harassment from supporters of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. The actor publicly called out the campaign and threatened to deactivate his Twitter account, though he ultimately did not. However, in 2023, amid major creative upheaval on the Disney+ Daredevil series, D’Onofrio deleted his X account and set his Instagram profile to private. Yet he has always come back.

How the actor chooses to respond to this latest round of negativity remains to be seen. One user suggested on his post that he might be better off on the left-leaning social media site BlueSky, but D’Onofrio dismissed the idea.

The Cost of Staying Connected

The question on many fans’ minds is what would be lost if D’Onofrio left social media for good. While direct interaction can foster a sense of connection and accessibility, it often comes at a cost.

No matter how carefully he curates his posts—or how earnestly he calls for positivity—he cannot control the broader online discourse or how audiences choose to respond. In the virtual space, even the Kingpin’s authority has its limits.

Oh my, the ego on this one.. For a threat to work, you need leverage, and nobody cares if Vincent stops posting on SoMe, in fact, quite the opposite i would suspect.
All these vapid tools have lost any sense of that “stardom and mystery” they once had, you know, back when they kept their private lives private, and didn’t try to lecture everyone on how to live and which politics to support on social media..

The era of the movie star is gone, and it will never return, good riddance, now we just need their inflated wages to come down so film budgets can return to a more reasonable bracket

What happened to these people to make them so damned thin-skinned? It’s pathetic.

Pfft. Don’t let the door hit you on your fat ass, Vince.
