Disney announced the reopening date for Big Thunder Mountain, with a lower height requirement.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom will reopen on May 3, 2026, following a lengthy refurbishment. The attraction has remained closed since January 2025 for a major refurbishment.
The Big Thunder Mountain reopening date was confirmed by Walt Disney World officials. The closure lasted approximately 16 months.
Upon reopening, guests 38-inches and taller will be able to ride. This lowers the height requirement from 40 inches. This comes after “a comprehensive review from our safety teams,” Disney announced.
Refurbishment Focused on Infrastructure and Systems
The refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad included significant work on the ride’s infrastructure. Crews replaced sections of track and updated ride control systems. These upgrades are part of standard long-term maintenance for high-use attractions. They help ensure smoother operation and reduce mechanical wear over time

Reports also indicated that Disney introduced updated ride vehicles. These vehicles are designed to work with the new track and control systems.
Same Story, New Scene
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad continues to follow the established story of Barnabas T. Bullion and the events that led to the mine’s closure. The attraction’s narrative centers on a mining operation disrupted by unexplained forces within the mountain. Disney has long framed the experience through this perspective, including the warning: “That menacing rumble from deep within the mountain may be a sign that we ain’t welcome.”

According to comments attributed to Wyatt Winter during an interview with Good Morning America, riders will now find gold within the mine itself. This detail represents a shift in how the story is presented visually. Earlier versions of the attraction referenced mining activity but did not prominently display gold as a focal point.
Another new ares is the Rainbow Caverns, with its phosphorescent pools. However, the new caverns “ain’t as friendly as they first appear.”
The scene is associated with the ‘Rainbow Caverns,’ a concept that originated in the former Rainbow Caverns Mine Train attraction at Disneyland, now new to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Historical Context and Role in Frontierland
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad first opened at Disneyland Park in 1979. The Magic Kingdom version debuted in 1980 as part of Frontierland.

The attraction is known for combining moderate coaster elements with environmental storytelling. It remains one of several rides designed to appeal to a broad audience, including families and younger riders who meet the height requirement.
Operational Impact of the Reopening
The reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad restores a key attraction within Frontierland. Extended closures can affect crowd patterns, as guests shift to other rides during refurbishment periods.

With the attraction returning in May 2026, this should help guest distribution in preparation for the summer season for the parks.
Visitors planning trips after the reopening date should expect standard operating conditions. As with all attractions, availability may vary due to maintenance or weather.
