Fans of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may be able to watch it on streaming at home sooner than expected. According to When to Stream, the blockbuster is slated to arrive on digital platforms May 5—roughly one month after its theatrical debut. Universal Pictures has not officially confirmed the date, and release plans could still change.

In March, Universal committed to an exclusive theatrical window of at least five weekends, a significant shift from its previous policy of just 17 days, or three weekends. Even so, given The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s strong box office performance, many expected the studio might keep the film exclusively in theaters for a longer run.

Strong Box Office, But a Faster PVOD Window

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not matching the pace set by its 2023 predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Even so, it has already earned $831,474,000 worldwide and is on track to finish as one of the year’s top-grossing releases. OMB Reviews at Geeks + Gamers estimates the film could cross the $1 billion mark within the next two to three weeks.

That milestone, however, may now be less certain if families know The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is heading to PVOD streaming soon. The film is already available for pre-order on digital platforms including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video, and YouTube Movies & TV at the standard $29.99 purchase price.

Notably, The Super Mario Bros. Movie did not reach PVOD until 41 days after its theatrical debut, while the sequel appears poised for a shorter 34-day window.

Other Studios Are Extending Theatrical Runs

Another point of comparison is Project Hail Mary, this year’s other major box office success. The film’s co-director, Christopher Miller, recently said on social media that MGM is extending its exclusive theatrical window, adding that it “won’t be on streaming anytime soon.”

Between the two releases, many industry observers may have expected Project Hail Mary to reach PVOD first, given that it was produced by Amazon MGM Studios, which also operates its own streaming platform.

Additionally, David Ellison reaffirmed at CinemaCon that Paramount-Skydance is committed to a minimum 45-day theatrical window for its releases. That pledge is also expected to apply to Warner Bros. titles if the proposed merger between the two companies receives regulatory approval.

For now, however, Universal appears to be sticking only to its five-weekend commitment for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie before moving it to streaming.

A New Test Case for Release Strategy

Ultimately, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s reported move to PVOD streaming highlights how fluid theatrical release strategies remain, even for major box office performers. While the sequel has generated impressive global revenue and remains one of the year’s biggest hits, Universal appears willing to capitalize on strong demand at home sooner rather than later.

That decision may boost digital sales, but it could also slow the film’s remaining theatrical momentum as families weigh the cost of a cinema trip against the convenience of watching at home. It also sets an interesting contrast with rival studios that are publicly recommitting to longer theatrical exclusivity windows.

If the May 5 date holds, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may become another test case for how studios balance box office endurance with immediate PVOD revenue.
