Actor Mark Hamill recently sparked outrage after a social media post featuring an AI-generated image of President Trump, seeming deceased, with the caption “If Only.” While Star Wars made the Luke Skywalker actor famous, recent years have also made him increasingly known for political rhetoric many fans dislike.

This latest outburst, however, appears to have crossed a line during a sensitive moment for both the country and Lucasfilm. Facing growing criticism, Hamill deleted the post from his Bluesky account and offered a response many critics considered less than a real apology.
The Post That Sparked Backlash
The image that ignited the firestorm was posted directly to Hamill’s verified Bluesky account. It showed a seemingly lifeless President Trump lying in dirt beneath a gravestone reading “DONALD J. TRUMP 1946–2024.” Across the bottom of the image were the words “If Only.”

A caption, presumably added by Hamill, provided additional commentary: ““If Only,” Hamill wrote. “He should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes. Long enough to realize he’ll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore. #don_TheCON”
For many critics, the post appeared to go beyond Mark Hamill simply expressing political opinions about Trump. Instead, they viewed it as openly fantasizing about the death of a sitting president.
White House Responds
Hamill’s post did not go unnoticed by the White House. A statement from the administration’s rapid response team read: “Mark Hamill is one sick individual. These Radical Left lunatics just can’t help themselves. This kind of rhetoric is exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts in two years against our President.”

While Trump has not responded to Hamill’s post directly, the official statement was enough to intensify the debate.
Hamill Attempts Clarification
Later, Mark Hamill offered an explanation on Bluesky for the post, claiming critics had misinterpreted his comments about Trump.
“Accurate Edit for Clarity: ‘He should live long enough to… be held accountable for his… crimes.’ Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate,” he wrote.

The post included an unflattering image of the president with his hair blowing wildly in the wind. Many critics felt the image, combined with the “I’m sorry if you were offended” tone, undermined any sense of a genuine apology. Others noted that Hamill only deleted the original grave post after the White House and media outlets began drawing attention to it.
Fallout for Star Wars?
For many fans, Mark Hamill remains the public face of Star Wars, and his image is deeply tied to the franchise. As Disney and Lucasfilm prepare to release The Mandalorian and Grogu later this month, Hamill’s comments could place both companies in an uncomfortable position.

Early box office tracking for the new Star Wars film already points to a potentially record-low opening weekend for the franchise. While neither Hamill nor another actor portraying Luke Skywalker has been confirmed for the film, Star Wars has struggled during the Disney era with a series of divisive projects.
Whether one of Star Wars’ most recognizable ambassadors casts a shadow over the new film remains unclear.
